The original Browning Hi-Power was designed in response to a French military requirement for a new service pistol. This new pistol needed to meet specific requirements including:

FN commissioned John Browning to design a pistol with these very specifications in mind. Browning already had the rights to the successful M1911, so he had to work around those patents.
