Fall Turkey Hunting Essentials

The tradition of turkey hunting began only in the fall season initially. During the first half of the 20th century, very few states even offered spring hunting seasons due to the limited turkey population. Though In time a rise in turkey populations made the spring hunt more popular and widely available, fall turkey hunting remains a cherished tradition.

As many as 44 states offer fall turkey hunting, giving shooters a second chance to bag that prized bird as well as an opportunity to experience the time-honored fall hunt. Whether you’re a veteran of turkey hunting or a newcomer, there are several factors to consider. So before you head out, check out our list of fall turkey hunting essentials to be fully prepared.

Turkey Hunting Shotgun

Fall vs Spring Turkey Habits

Fall turkey hunting is its own unique sport. Many tactics and gear that you’d normally use in the spring won’t necessarily work in the fall. For example, scouting is key to finding turkeys in this season. Unlike spring turkey hunting, fall hunters must rely less on sounds, scratching, or flapping wings.

Fall Turkey Habits:

  • Hens and Jakes tend to flock together in search of food like hickory nuts, beetles and bugs, corn and grains, grass, and acorns
  • Toms tend to be loners, keeping to themselves while searching for food
  • Fall flocks wander over a wide area and sometimes will not return to the same spot for many days. The typical range for a fall flock is between 250 and 400 acres

Spring Turkey Habits:

  • Toms turn into lovers instead of loners. They are notably vocal and will strut more.
  • Jakes and Toms will flock together and a pecking order within the group will be established.
  • Every Tom and Jake are in competition to capture the attention of a hen, so decoys are a great tool for hunters.
  • Turkeys typically visit the same roosting, strutting, and feeding areas each day.

Choose Your Weapon

There are countless methods hunters use to take down their game. Each has benefits and drawbacks, and some are more apt for beginners than others. When choosing your weapon, consider your hunting style, terrain, experience level, and price range.

Archery

Using a bow for fall turkey hunting is, typically, not for beginners because it can be challenging. However, bow hunting is incredibly exhilarating and rewarding. Fall and winter bow hunting seasons for wild turkeys are often long and generous in many states, which means you’ll get ample opportunity to land your prized bird.

Turkey Hunting Tips for Fall Bow Hunting:

  • Make sure you are comfortable shooting your bow from a seated position; most turkey hunts happen on the ground.
  • If you are positioned in a blind, ensure that you have enough room to draw back your bow. If you can’t comfortably sit and draw back your bow, consider reducing your draw weight.
  • Compound bows are a great, safe option for beginners. Compound bows are faster and more forgiving while you’re figuring out form.
  • Consider all your broadhead options. Some are designed for aiming at a turkey’s neck and head, while others are designed for the turkey’s vitals in the body. In order to ethically take down your turkey, do your research and pick the broadhead that best fits your needs.

Turkey Hunting Shotguns

The shotgun is by far the most popular choice for turkey hunting. However, not just any shotgun will do. In fact, many manufacturers now specifically design turkey shotguns for sale, which include unique features that are specifically compatible with turkey hunting such as:

  • A short barrel
  • A tight choke
  • The ability to shoot heavy loads
  • Sling swivels
  • A matte or camo finish

Additional considerations for your hunting shotgun should include weight. If you are hiking or tracking, you will want a platform that is lightweight. A 12 gauge shotgun such as the Remington 870 12 gauge, is traditionally the preferable option. GrabAGun offers an extensive line of turkey hunting shotguns which includes Winchester, Mossberg, and Remington shotguns.

Tungsten vs Lead Ammo

There are a few things to consider when choosing ammo for fall turkey hunting. For example, a heavy load may not be a necessity in the fall season as it would be in the spring season, since fall turkey’s tend to be smaller and more fragile. Other things to look for include the length, price range, and shot size. The most popular turkey hunting loads are lead and tungsten-based. Find the best type of ammo for sale at GrabAGun that fits your needs!

Lead

Turkey hunting with lead ammunition is a hugely popular choice. This shotgun ammo has a proven track record of consistency and power. It is the traditional choice for many turkey hunting loads, and thanks to modern innovation, many lead loads are more effective than ever.

Tungsten

An increasingly popular shotgun ammo choice is Tungsten. Not only is it much denser and heavier than lead, but it also penetrates deeper and maintains a sturdy shape. Thanks to tungsten’s heavier pellets, these loads carry more energy further downrange. The result is the take down of turkeys at greater distances and with greater stopping power.

History of the Ruger 10/22

In 1963, founder William B. Ruger began developing the 10/22 rifle initially for police officers and military personnel. The Ruger 10-22 was first introduced to the public in 1964 and quickly gained popularity. It became a reputable rifle on the market known for its accuracy, durability, and low cost. In 1974, Ruger made a slight modification to the design by removing some of the chrome from the barrel and changing out the sights with a peep sight.

Although the Ruger 1022 was originally intended for law enforcement officers, it is now considered an excellent small game hunting rifle. Its lightweight design and aluminum receiver make it easy to carry in the field. From hunters to target shooters, the durable and rugged 10/22 Ruger is meant for everyone. In fact, we wrote previously about this popular Ruger firearm in a blog post entitled 6 Reasons You Should Own a Ruger 10/22.

Ruger 10/22 Carbine

The Ruger 10/22 Carbine maintains the classic look and feel of the original 10/22 Ruger. Its precise Ruger design ensures consistent and reliable performance. It comes chambered in .22 LR with an 18.5 inch barrel and a 10 round magazine. It features a hardwood stock, a gold bead front sight and adjustable rear sight, and alloy steel material. The cold hammer-forged barrel is locked into the receiver by a unique, two-screw, V-block system. It also includes an easy-to-use extended magazine release that provides smooth removal of the flush-mounted magazine, a cross-bolt safety, and a heat-stabilized, glass-filled, polymer trigger housing assembly. Ruger 10/22 Takedown

No other rifle possesses the ability of simple disassembly and reassembly like the versatile Ruger 10/22 Takedown. The incredible takedown feature allows fast separation of the barrel from the action for easy transportation and storage. Simple reassembly ensures a secure connection of the barrel and action. This resets the firearm to zero, even with the use of receiver-mounted optics, resulting in consistent accuracy with every shot.

The Ruger Takedown rifle comes chambered in .22 LR with a 16.1 inch barrel and a 10 round magazine. It features a synthetic stock, satin black steel receiver, cold hammered forged fluted barrel, and cross-bolt manual safety. Additional features include a combination scope base adapter for both Weaver-style and .22 tip-off scope mounts and a convenient carry case with extra pockets and magazine pouches.

You can choose to buy a stripped lower and then complete it with your choice of parts kit, stock, grip, trigger, and receiver extension, or you might prefer to purchase a complete lower that is fully assembled and ready to go! With the addition of a complete upper, you will be ready to add sights or your optic of choice, and then shoot your new rifle. It is important to note that the AR lower receiver is serialized and is subject to regulation.

Lowers come in different colors, finishes, and materials that can change the look and feel of your entire gun. Some lowers even have eye-catching designs etched into them that will make your AR the most unique rifle at the range! Depending on how you plan to use your AR-15, you want to make sure you get the correct lower that fits your needs. There are typically three types of lower receivers:

Forged Billet Polymer
Forged aluminum receivers are the most popular type of lower. Superheated and hammered into the shape of a lower, these receivers are typically lighter than Billet receivers and are the strongest. However, the lower has to be chiseled down after forging to take off any excess aluminum. This can lead to imperfections in the fit and finish if too little or too much aluminum is taken off. Billet receivers are usually milled out of a block of aluminum. Since these lowers are milled by machines, they are extremely precise and are highly customizable. However, they can be a bit heavier due to excess materials usually used for a design on the lower. They are technically less strong than a forged receiver since the aluminum isn’t hammer forged. The polymer receivers are cut from polymer instead of aluminum. These are still fairly new and are much weaker than the other two. While these are still catching on in popularity, these lowers are much cheaper and lighter. This makes them a great option for a shooter on a budget or for someone wanting a lightweight build.

In the end, it is up to you to decide which type of receiver fits your AR-15 build. Go to GrabAGun online to check out all types of AR-15 lowers and get the best deal today!

About the AR-15

History

The first AR-15 was developed by the ArmaLite Company. ArmaLite traces its beginnings back to 1950s Hollywood. It was founded by George Sullivan and, originally, the company was focused on weapons design, not manufacturing. The chief architect behind ArmaLite’s weapons designs was a man named Eugene Stoner, who is credited as the original designer of the AR-15 model. In case you haven’t figured out, the AR in AR 15 does not stand for “assault rifle” as many might have you believe. It actually stands for ArmaLite, the original developer of the firearm.

The first weapon designed by the company was the AR-5, a bolt-action rifle with a .22 Hornet round. It was developed as a survival rifle for the flight crew in the Air Force. After that came a replacement for the M1 Garand. ArmaLite developed an AR-10 rifle that, unfortunately, the military did not adopt. However, it set the precedent for what we know today. In 1959, Colt bought the designs for the AR-15 and began producing the firearm. By 1961, the U.S. Air Force began testing the AR-15 Colt was producing, commissioning 8,500 for Air Force use.

TekMat detailing AR15 basics

How It Works

From the start, the AR-15 has been a gas-operated, semi-automatic rifle. Semi-automatic means that every pull of the trigger constitutes one shot. So, as soon as the cartridge is ejected, a new one slides into the chamber automatically, thus the name. Compare that to a pump-action shotgun, where every time you shoot, you have to pump the slide in order to eject the cartridge and begin the next cycle.

Direct Impingement

The type of gas system the AR15 uses is a direct impingement. This is a system that directs gas from the ignited gunpowder of a cartridge to the slide assembly, or the bolt barrier, to cycle the rifle’s action. The thing about a direct impingement system is that it doesn’t use a separate piston, gas cylinder, and operating rod assembly, unlike other traditional gas-operated firearms.

Instead, the pressure from the emitted gas acts upon the carrier and the bolt to cause the firing action. Ultimately, this system makes the overall cost cheaper and the rifle’s weight lighter by decreasing the mass of its operating parts. The only downside to this system is that the breech of the firearm becomes more prone to fouling. (Fouling is that build-up of powder residues due to high temperatures and frequent exposure to moisture)

Standard Facts

A standard AR-15 of today is a lightweight, semi-automatic rifle or carbine fed from a 30-round box magazine. It’s normally chambered in 5.56x45mm that can also fire .223 Remington. I’m using several buzzwords like ‘standard’ and ‘normal’ because the phrase ‘standard AR-15 rifle’ is a little relative. It encompasses all kinds of variants and permutations of the AR15 including the itty bitty 9mm’s with 7-inch barrels all the way to the 22-inch, .300 WinMags, and beyond. For the sake of this post and this post alone, when we’re referring to the AR-15, we’re talking bout the “classic” 5.56mm version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AR-15 an “assault rifle”?

No. An assault rifle is a select-fire, fully automatic weapon (better known as a machine gun. Think UZI or the Thompson Submachine Gun). That in mind, it’s illegal for civilians to own a fully automatic weapon in the United States. Anything like that is only in service with militaries, law enforcement, and/or defense organizations. The AR15 is a semi-automatic weapon and it’s no different, legally or in name, from any other semi-automatic weapon you’d buy or build.

Can I order an AR15 online?

Yes and no. The only part of a AR 15 that’s actually considered a firearm is the stripped lower receiver. All other parts, including the upper receiver, barrel, parts kit, buttstock, gas system, etc. are not considered firearms. That means they can be purchased online and shipped to your home. You don’t need an FFL to make the transfer, not unless you want to. You can find great AR 15 rifle deals–ready to shoot guns as well as parts–at GrabAGun today!

Is the AR-15 good for beginners?

Honestly? Yeah.

When broken down, part by part, the AR-15 is kind of a mediocre firearm. But, put everything together and you’ve got yourself an exceptional rifle. Bonus: it’s incredibly lightweight for its class. Yes, there are several rifles that outperform the AR-15, but in terms of overall performance, there is nothing quite like it.

Beginners will find that it’s easy to handle. The AR15 is considered a soft shooter, meaning there is minimal felt recoil or muzzle rise. On top of it begin lightweight, it has a relatively simple control layout. Most models also feature an adjustable stock to accommodate the shooter’s stature and if the shooter is wearing body armor or backpack straps. Loading is pretty simple and easy to pick up on. Despite that minimal action, it’s fairly accurate and can reach targets several hundred meters away.

In terms of maintenance, the AR15 doesn’t really require frequent oiling and cleaning. Now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever take care of your firearm, but it’s not as high-maintenance as you might think. When the time does come to care for it, you can easily disassemble its base.

Is the AR15 good for hunting?

Yes, the AR15 is lightweight and powerful enough to take down large animals. It’s easy to carry and can certainly immobilize a target. Plus, it’s safer to use due to its “drop safety” feature, something not common among hunting rifles. Harsh weather, rain–you name it and the AR 15 can handle it since the stock isn’t made of wood. Wood, as you know, expands and warps when exposed to moisture. That can cause issues with aiming down the line.

Many do prefer a semi-automatic rifle like the AR15 for hunting since shooters don’t have to adjust their hand positions after every shot. This is critical when hunting pack animals such as coyotes and wild boar where the shooter may need/want to take down multiple animals quickly. That’s much easier to do when you aren’t having to shift positions after each and every shot.

Not to sound like a broken record, but the AR15 has minimal recoil and muzzle creep. When hunting, especially for a first-time hunter, this is a huge advantage. You’re more likely to experience greater accuracy with more time for follow-up shots this way.

The Infamous History of The “Tommy Gun”

A Thompson Tommy Gun for Everyone

Anyone who has watched an old movie or browsed through a book on World War II will quickly recognize the familiar outline of the Thompson submachine gun or, better known as the “Tommy gun”. Museums, news outlets, and iconic movies have shown these guns to be a key staple to the “Roaring Twenties” theme. Long before the AR 15, these guns had an exciting run in the Chicago gang scene before being used to help bring victory in WWII. As you can imagine, we are history buffs, especially when it comes to firearms. We carry everything you need from bulk 9mm ammo to a Glock 43. We even carry the .45 caliber Tommy Gun here at GrabAGun and you can pick one up for yourself as well! If you are interested in learning more about this iconic firearm, keep on reading.

Tommy gun advertisement

A Brief History

This famous gun was made by John Taliaferro Thompson, a distinguished and retired Brigadier General of the U.S. Army Ordnance Department. When the Thompson Submachine Gun was first developed, it was built to end trench warfare tactics during World War I. Unfortunately, the guns first made an appearance on the day the war ended. By 1919, Thompson directed the newly formed Auto-Ordnance to modify the gun for non-military use–a move that would be lucrative in civilian markets.

As the Thompson Submachine gun gained popularity around America in law enforcement circles, it gained a special type of popularity with Chicago’s gangs. It has had many “unofficial” names over the years such as “The Annihilator”, “The Trench Broom”, “The Chopper”, or “The Chicago Typewriter”. Many media outlets coined these names for the gun specifically because of the enormous amount of firepower this gun could do on the Chicago streets.

The Tommy Gun in Organized Crime

In the early twenties, organized crime and gangsters began to appear in Chicago, the stomping grounds of many gangs and gang wars. If you’ve watched any amount of gangster films, then you’ll know they didn’t start with AR15 rifles or even Glock handguns. The seemingly popular choice for gangsters back then was the Thompson submachine gun. From what we know, the gangster who introduced Tommy guns to the gang scene was Frank McErlane. A Prohibition-era Irish American gangster that led the Saltis-McErlane Gang, allied with the Johnny Torrio-Al Capone gang, McErlane used the guns against rival bootleggers called the Southside O’Donnell Brothers. The Tommy Gun’s reputation preceded it and left a lasting impression.

So why the Thompson submachine gun? Why not one of the other more popular guns for sale at the time? Well, the Tommy Gun was a submachine firearm. The sole reason it was built was to end trench warfare. However, gangsters realized quickly that it could wreak havoc with little effort on their part. That said, the Tommy Gun was actually not hugely popular with most gangs. In fact, only a few hundred–out of the thousands made–were even used by gangs. Still, the spray of bullets from a firearm like this made the gun seem so much bigger than it really was.

Concealing such a large firearm, with an even larger drum magazine, was essentially impossible though. Naturally, it’s much easier to conceal a handgun like a Beretta or even a modern-day Ruger LCP for sale, but we’re not talking about handguns; we’re talking about a submachine gun. How do you effectively conceal such a large weapon? At first, many tried to hide them in violin or cello cases. The iconic image is one that we see in movies, but the public (the cops) caught on quickly and attempts to conceal the Tommy Gun lost traction.

Still from the movie, St. Valentine's Day Massacre
Still from the movie St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

The fact that the Thompson featured in a few spectacular front-page crimes did nothing to detract from its image as a deadly weapon. The best known of these is no doubt the notorious “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” of 1929. There’s even a fantastic movie based on the events of this day (and yes, it heavily features the Tommy Gun throughout!) On this day, henchmen of the sinister Al Capone, who was conveniently alibied in Florida, mowed down seven members of the “Bugs” Moran gang in a Chicago garage. This incident resulted in the struggle to control organized crime in the city during Prohibition between Irish North Siders and their Italian rivals.

It was this event that led Auto-Ordnance to halt the manufacture of Tommy guns for public use. That said, gangsters would continue to carry them long after the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. To this day, submachine guns are still illegal in the United States. The gun that Auto-Ordnance replicates these days is a semi-automatic, .45 caliber rifle that you can easily pick up from GrabAGun today!

Despite its notoriety among gangsters, the use of the Thompson submachine gun by criminals is smaller than you might imagine. More often than not, it was actually used by American soldiers and lawmen. The main reason we associate the Thompson with gangsters today has to do with news coverage and Hollywood. During their heyday, bandits loved the notoriety that came with their conquests. They would send press releases to local newspapers to take responsibility for and gain attention for their criminal acts. Naturally, the Depression-weary public ate it up. That news coverage led to several decades worth of some of the best gangster films. Hollywood dramatized the rivalry between the good guys and the bad guys, thus immortalizing the Tommy Gun and its creator, making it one of the most powerful weapons of its time.

The Tommy Gun in the Media

Personally, I knew of Tommy Guns from the movies. Gangster films perpetuated the idea of good guys versus bad guys–and of course, the bad guys always had a big, powerful firearm. Seriously, go back and watch any James Cagney film and you’ll be playing Where’s Waldo, but with Tommy Guns. He wasn’t the only one to wield a Thompson, though. There are plenty of movies that featured this iconic firearm.

The Untouchables movie poster
  • The Untouchables (1987). Probably the most prolific use of the Tommy Gun
  • The God Father, Part I (1972). We won’t do a Corleone impression but just know. We’re doing a Corleone impression.
  • The Public Enemy (1931). See! James Cagney!
  • Little Cesar (1931). The gangster, not the pizza.
  • Ma Barker’s Killer Brood (1960)
  • Scarface (1932)
  • The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967)

The fact of the matter is, Hollywood both romanticized and villanized the Tommy Gun. It was and is a beautiful piece of machinery that has earned its place in history. If you’re looking to add something like this to your own collection, GrabAGun is the only name to rely on. We have incredible deals on the Tommy gun and other guns for sale right now, so don’t wait!

World War II

Regardless of what was shown in the media, the Thompson submachine gun will always be associated with the victories of World War II. Because they missed their window during the first world war, the 40s were the time to shine. With the beginning of World War II, John Thompson was finally able to fulfill his lifelong wish for his Thompson submachine gun to be used to help end a war. The total number of Thompsons bought by the U.S. Army before WWII was less than 400. By the time the war was starting, thousands were being shipped out all over the world to help. Simplified for mass production, this gun was seen as one of the most popular guns among specialized troops and was eagerly sought after. Even today many veterans consider it the best weapon of WWII.

As for General Thompson, he would never see the overwhelming success of his gun as a military weapon. He died in 1940 at the age of 80 years, but he left his mark on the history of military weapons just like he wanted. However, he also left his mark on many people all over the U.S. throughout the 1920s and 30s. With the help of gangsters, lawmen, and the media, this gun is one of the most well-known firearms in the world.
