Shooting for Gold: Team USA at the Olympic Shooting Competition

Olympic Shooting has been around since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens 1896 and it has only grown in popularity and renown. These early events included live pigeon shooting and military weapons competitions, proving the capabilities of shooters in every capacity. Since 1896, there have only been two games where a shooting competition did not occur (1904 and 1928.)

A true test of marksmanship, accuracy, and discipline, this sport tests both the physical and psychological limits of shooters. Competitions are won—and lost—by mere millimeters. The Tokyo 2020 Shooting Olympic Games will feature the best handguns, shotguns, 22LR ammo, and more, where only the greatest shooters bring home the gold.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

At Tokyo 2020, there are 15 total events (6 men’s, 6 women’s, 3 mixed) in shotgun, rifle, and pistol disciplines:

Men’s events:

Rifle: 50m Rifle 3 Positions, 10m Air Rifle

Pistol: 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, 10m Air Pistol

Shotgun: Trap Skeet

Women’s events:

Rifle: 50m Rifle 3 Positions, 10m Air Rifle

Pistol: 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, 10m Air Pistol

Shotgun: Trap Skeet

Mixed team:

Rifle: 10m Air Rifle

Pistol: 10m Air Pistol

Shotgun: Trap Skeet

Each of these events consists of a qualifying round and a final round. Only the top 6 or 8 shooters progress to the final rounds. The winner is then determined by the shooter with the highest total score, and if there happen to be any ties they are broken by shoot-offs.

Team USA

Shooting competitions require not only immense durability but also incredible control. This sport is not just about physical strength and grit—there are considerable intellectual and psychological demands that come into play. These athletes train for years, spending hours upon hours at the range preparing to compete.

Suma Shirur, a world-record holder in the 10-meter air rifle event, explained the sport’s demands:

“[The] most natural aspect of the human body is movement. If I have to control the movement, hold my body steady, at the same place for a long period of time, I need a lot of muscle endurance. That needs a lot of strength. For that, you need to have good fitness.”

The odds are in great favor of Team USA bringing home gold. For one, Olympic Games veteran Vincent Hancock is leading the USA Shooting Team at Tokyo 2020. This will be the fourth straight Olympic Games where Hancock competes, having won consecutive gold medals in Beijing 2008 and London 2012. The rest of the team includes U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit team members, along with countless shooters who have broken world records and won NCAA championships.

Olympic Ammunition

A shooter is only as good as their gun and ammo. Team USA took great care to ensure their shooters are equipped with the best, which is why Federal Ammunition shotshells and Eley Ammunition 22LR ammo are the only names you’ll see these competitors sporting at this year’s games.

Federal Ammunition

As the official ammunition of USA Shooting, Federal is providing shotshells for the trap and skeet events at Tokyo 2020. Federal Ammunition is known for making some of the best centerfire, shotshell, and rimfire ammunition, exhibiting a legacy of excellence and innovation.

Olympic shooters willingly express their love for Federal Ammunition. Derrick Mein, who will be participating in the Men’s Trap event, said:

“Federal’s consistency, quality, and reliability allow me to focus on my skills and breaking targets without worry that my ammo will do the job, if I do mine.”

Kayle Browning, who will be competing in the Women’s Trap event, also voiced her love of the brand, noting Federal’s reputation for efficiency and reliability:

“The Gold Medal 24-gram International loads by Federal are incredible. They pattern so efficiently every time, and the shot size is consistent, so I never have to worry about my ammo not performing the way I need it to.”

There is no doubt that Federal is up to the task of helping these Olympic shooters bring home the gold. Using incredible accuracy, strength, and consistency, Federal delivers with every load.
