History of Firearms & Guns For Sale

history of firearms and guns

Gun History

Did you know? Guns didn’t always look like they do now. The first known “gun” was a bamboo tube using gunpowder to propel a spear and appeared in China at about 1000AD. The Chinese invented gunpowder in the 9th century.

The Fire Lance

The fire lance was an early form of a firearm. It consisted of a black-powder filled tube attached to the end of a spear and used as a flamethrower. Occasionally, the barrel held shrapnel and would fly out with the flames. Over time, the amount of saltpeter was increased to provide a greater explosive force and metal replaced paper and bamboo barrels as a direct need of increased explosive force.

The Projectile

Later, the projectile replaced shrapnel and more fully filled the metal tube. This provided the metal barrel, high nitrate gunpowder, and a projectile occluding the muzzle which allowed the powder charge to provide a guns propellant potential.

Gunpowder & Handheld Cannons

Gunpowder came to Europe by the 13th century. The oldest known firearm in Europe was found in Otepaa, Estonia and dates to 1380 or earlier. In Italy during the late 13th century, Italians developed small portable handheld cannons, creating the first smooth-bore personal firearm.

During the early years of the modern age, these personal hand held cannons developed into the flintlock rifle, which then evolved into the breech loader and lastly into the modern automatic weapons of today.

Fixed Ammunition & Civil War

The paper cartridge was developed in 1586 and, by 1850, brass was used for fixed ammunition. Repeating firearms was the next innovation with repeating revolvers. The first successful rapid-fire firearm was the Gatling gun, invented by Richard Gatling and used by the Union forces during the American Civil War. At the time, it required four men to operate it and subsequent upgrades saw it used in the Spanish American War. However, its unreliability on the battlefield resulted in its retirement.

Guns in America

America and guns grew up together. The advances in firearms at the hands of Americans grew faster than what came before. American gun legends were born and American ingenuity had begun with a rapid succession in inventions and innovations that would change the world.

Through the ages, guns have grown increasingly sophisticated and continue to do so year after year. From a bamboo tube “gun” to modern firearms able to acquire targets, the ages offer a peek into the future.

Concealed Carry Self Defense Insurance

Most gun owners consider owning a firearm as a form of protection against those who would harm us, or our family.

In the last few years, persons claiming self-defense that resulted in the death of someone found themselves embroiled in charges and potential civil suits. Have you ever really considered what would occur after the unthinkable happens and you are forced to defend yourself with your firearm?

It doesn’t end just because you are legally armed. There will be a court proceeding to determine if the legal requirements for using deadly force were justified. Even if you are not charged, the family of the deceased individual may file a civil suit against you. In the best case scenario you prove your justification in protecting yourself and you walk away once more, though you will have already spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars or even hundreds of thousands to defend yourself.

Many insurance providers now offer concealed carry and self-defense insurance (CCSDI). The following will assist you in choosing a plan.

  • First, check with your homeowners insurance to see if you are eligible for CCSDI under your homeowner’s policy.
  • Second, check your state of residences laws. If your state has Stand Your Ground Laws they may protect you against a civil lawsuit in a lawful self-defense occurrence. If your state’s law don’t protect you against a civil suit you may want to consider CCSDI that covers the cost of civil suits. Check your laws often, they can change.
  • Third, carefully consider the plans you are considering, how many levels of protection they offer and whether or not they pay for defense costs upfront, after you have paid it yourself (reimbursement). Many insurance companies will only pay after you have been found not guilty, leaving you to pay the costs upfront.

Other things to consider are:

  • Try to determine how much coverage you would need. Ask questions such as how much are court costs per hearing? What do the attorneys in my area charge an hour, how much is their retainer fee, and how many hours would court and attorneys average? If you have an attorney, it may be worthwhile to ask him these questions. Many attorneys don’t charge for calls requesting information.
  • Check the details, ask if expert witnesses are covered and will they be paid up front, or reimbursed to you after you pay. Does the insurer have a network of expert witnesses?
  • Ask if the plan provides an attorney of their choice or your own choice. Find out if the plan covers only you, or other family members were an incident to occur with your gun in your home.

Youth Gun Safety: Why Is It Important?

gun safety for children kids youth

Youth Gun Safety

A child’s willingness to obey and act responsibly, and not wildly, should be a key prerequisite for instructing a child in the use of guns. Gun safety, however, should be taught young, and repeated throughout childhood to ensure they do not forget.

The statistics claim half of all U. S. households have firearms. It is therefore a good idea to begin gun safety at a young age, as they can potentially encounter a gun anywhere, at any time.

A child may never act responsibly enough to earn the right to shoot, but all children should be taught certain essentials of gun safety; even if there is no gun in your home. There are guns in other homes your child may visit. A child knowing what to do, as well as what not to do, can save their life or the lives of others.

Gun Safety Classes For Kids

Firearm instruction classes are available for children and youth. The focus of these programs is first gun safety and keeping your child safe. These programs remove the mystery children see surrounding guns and reinforce safety and proper handling. In essence, these programs teach what a child needs to know to keep themselves safe. They learn what to do if they find a firearm and if someone points a gun at them (even if it is only a toy gun). They also learn how to tell a toy gun from a real gun, what to do if a friend wants to show them a parent’s gun, what a real gun feels like, and a demonstration as to how powerful a firearm really is.

NRA Firearm Classes

If you are considering a firearm class for your children, ensure that you choose one using NRA Rules for safe firearm handling. The NRA provides a gun safety program call the “Eddie Eagle Program” and it can be taught at home. The sample kit contains a copy of the student workbook, an instructor’s guide, program statistics, a description of materials, an order form, and the Parents’ Guide to Gun Safety brochure. This program is also available for schools, churches and other interested parties.

To receive a copy of the text for the brochure, email [email protected] or call (800) 231-0752. Gun safety should begin in the home and a child should be taught from day one. Answering the child’s questions can help to satisfy their curiosity regarding firearms. It is also a good time to explain the differences between toy guns and genuine firearms. Visit the NRA’s website for further information and how to locate a class for your child.

The Classic .22 Rifle For Sale

22 rifles for sale

The .22 Rifle

It is generally a shooters first gun, the perfect weapon for youth and novices alike to train and gain accuracy with. Some small game hunters prefer it, and many outdoor enthusiasts carry it for protection from the threats of predators. You have probably guessed the identity of the weapon I refer to; it’s the .22 rifle.

A great many of us have fond memories of our first gun. By today’s standards, many consider it obsolete; yet it has a large fan base and that number is growing on the practice range. The evidence of this is in the supply of .22 ammo. The retailers, and even the gun shops, stay sold out. I have been unable to locate any in 4 years in my locale. Buying online is my only alternative.

Cost

It is generally a very affordable firearm, and there is a .22 rifle for almost any budget. Ask anyone why they like the .22 caliber guns and most answers will be the same: because it’s cheap. You can buy 10 times the .22 cartridges for the same price of a box of centerfire cartridges and, when you compare it to your big guns, the .22 rifle for sale is the big bargain. A day on the range is actually affordable if you’re using .22 caliber ammo.

Noise and Recoil

The .22 rifle is a lot quieter than other guns and has almost no recoil. You can shoot the .22 without the pain that comes from other guns after a long day on the range. It also enables some shooters with degenerative conditions in the hands due to age or injury to continue shooting. Any shooter with nerve damage in the hands is going to shy away from recoil.

Lightweight and Easy Maneuverability

Most .22 rifles for sale are lightweight and easily carried in hand or on a sling. Overall, the .22 is a very reliable weapon. Some writers will say the .22’s accuracy is in the medium range. That certainly hasn’t been my experience. I know plenty of people who use the .22 rifle on the firing range, to hunt small game, and especially for plinking. From cheap to expensive, all of the brand names are there and they are accurate. Whether you want a Ruger .22 Rifle, a CZ 457 Varmint rifle, or a Savage Mark II; there are plenty of options available to you at GrabAGun.

The .22 Rifle at GrabAGun

There are also a lot of gun accessories available for the .22 caliber, enabling you trick it out however you want. The .22 rifle is a fun gun, reasonably priced, cheap to shoot, light to carry, and can put dinner on the table if you are a decent shot. Every gun has its niche and I don’t see the popularity of the .22 rifle going away any time soon.

GrabAGun offers a large assortment of .22 rifles for sale, as well as an extensive selection of other bolt action rifles for sale, gun parts, scopes, and much more! Give our friendly customer service agents a call if you need assistance or information.

Rising AR15 Sales in Spite of Gun Control Push

Guns in the News

Gun Sales for 2013 up 1.6 million

Though the reasons completely lack any mystery, gun control advocates are likely irritated by the irony of gun control, or even the threat of gun control, having the direct impact of raising gun sales.

The FBI recently released the statistics for 2013’s background checks. Unsurprisingly, the more gun control is pushed, the higher the number of gun sales that occur.

Though many anti-gunners seldom acknowledge it, all states are required to comply with background checks on any firearms sold through a federally licensed dealer. This is the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The year of 2013 set a new record in gun sales across the nation. The total number of background checks provided for gun sales last year was 21,093,273. This beats the previous 2012 record of 19,592,303 by 1,500,970. The state of Texas conducted the most background checks with Kentucky coming in second.

States that forced more gun control on its citizens also saw an increase in gun sales. Maryland almost doubled its sales in 2013, with Colorado, Connecticut and New York all seeing an increase in gun sales. Many states set a new record number of sales, Virginia despite new background check legislation saw a 10.8% increase in sales over its previous record.

These statistics should serve as an eye opener to law makers and gun-control advocates that Americans across the nation are unwilling to give up their guns or rights to guns.

Gun Control 2014 Elicits Executive Action

In January, 2014 President Obama signed new Executive Orders aimed at reinforcing background checks, and developing emergency response plans for schools and religious institutions, and addresses mental health issues related to gun violence.

One of his new executive actions addresses making it easier for states to report “limited information necessary to keep guns out of potentially dangerous hands,” and is regarding mentally ill persons. The patient right to privacy is protected under The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy, Security and Notification Rules. This executive action would allow federal databases to access mental health records by circumventing federal patient privacy laws.

It is currently up to individual states to establish and maintain a database and the procedure for reporting information regarding potentially dangerous mentally ill patients. Currently only two states have such a program in place. The Presidents executive order bypasses the states providing this database and enables the federal government to develop a nationwide program aimed at preventing mentally ill persons who are a potential danger to others to be identified on a national database that would be accessed during firearms background checks.

The second of the presidents executive actions would clarify that those persons involuntarily committed to a mental institution, whether as an inpatient or outpatient could qualify under the law as “committed to a mental institution,” and result in their inability to purchase a firearm from a federally licensed dealer.

While on the outset keeping guns out of the hands of those mentally ill persons who are a threat to the safety of others seems like common sense, the question must be made of who determines a person is a danger to others. The mental health field is not an exact science and leaves room for omissions and errors.

When American’s gave the government the go ahead for the Patriot Act it opened up a can of worms that has been growing ever since. History proves government not held in check always becomes tyrannical. Tyranny does not require the weapons of war to overcome a nation. It is often conquered with a mere pen.

Protect Yourself From Home Invasion

Keep Your Family Safe from Home Invasion

Reduce the chances of your family becoming a victim of a home invasion with these home invasion protection tips. While most states have no specific laws to define a home invasion or differentiate it from burglary, home invasion can be described as any entrance by force or by deception of an occupied property with the intention of committing a crime.

Home Invasion Vs. Burglary

There is a difference in burglary vs. home invasion as the average burglar will target homes that look unoccupied. Whereas home invaders look for homes in which the residents appear to be in.

Home invasions target occupied homes in order to use terror or violence to force occupants to reveal the location of valuables, force the homeowner to open the home safe, or force them to give up their debit and credit card pin numbers. Many home invaders are more than just thieves. They thrive on terror and sometimes murder. Home invasions are especially dangerous because they want violent confrontation to occur, whereas ordinary burglars prefer to avoid it.

Home Invasion Protection Tips

Know Your Criminals

If criminals know that your home security is lacking with poor quality locks on your external doors, they may force their way in with a few swift kicks to your door and hold any occupants hostage until they get your valuables. Invaders often use deception to get you to open the door. Common tricks are borrowing a phone due to an automotive breakdown, an injured person, or injured animal. Offer to make the call for them, but keep the door closed and locked. If they refuse, call the police as they may go down the street to a neighbor’s home.

Be suspicious of anyone claiming to be from any utility company. Uniforms can be duplicated or stolen and signs for utility vehicles are easily copied in the digital world of today. Ask for an ID to be held to the door viewer, get his name, and call the utility company he claims to be representing. Look the number up yourself. Don’t trust any number he gives you as it can be an accomplice.

Check Your Doors & Locks

Protecting against home invasion by forced entry requires the same physical barriers of home security as protecting your home against burglary. All exterior doors and frames should be of a quality as to deter forced entry, be in good repair, connected to a home alarm system, and fitted with deadbolt locks.

Know the construction of doors before you buy them. Steel clad is not as strong as steel doors. Wooden door frames are vulnerable and steel frames are stronger. Good grade steel clads for hinge and lock areas can strengthen any door, but it is useless if it is only attached to bare wooden frames. A 4 × 4 wooden post clad in a good grade of steel sheathing that completely encloses the 4 × 4 in the lock area is stronger than a 2 ×4 constructed the same way. Solid steel frames are even stronger.

Wood, as well as locks, have little to no resistance against a 16 pound sledge hammer. Recessed locks are harder to strike with a sledge hammer. Insist upon doors with features providing home invasion safety door protection. Nothing short of Fort Knox construction can completely prevent a forced entry. The goal is to buy your family time to escape, arm yourself, or retreat to a safe room.

Train Your Family

One of the most important features in home invasion protection is establishing good security safety practiced by the whole family. Do not open your door unless you know the caller or are certain of their intention. Do not count on door chains to prevent a forced entry. They are of light weight construction and easily broken. Always have a door viewer on the door or a home security surveillance system to establish who is calling. Surveillance cameras with monitors that will allow for two cameras are available for as little as $40. Intercoms are also helpful. Criminals may purposely speak too low for you to hear, hoping you will open the door.

Use Common Sense

The man who knocks on your door may claim he has been shot and there may appear to be blood on his shirt, but is the area growing? If he has a lot of blood on him and really is injured his lips may be blue or grey (central cyanosis) or he may be wearing makeup on his lips. Ask him to hold his fingernails up to the door viewer, if they are also blue he may be telling the truth-or not. He may even collapse on your porch and you should certainly call for help for him. Unless you have medical training that can assist him, the only thing you will be able to do is to call 911. Tell the bleeding stranger (through the intercom or closed door) that you are doing so. If he gets up and runs away then you know you have foiled a home invasion that could have cost you your life.

Ultimately you must use your own judgment, but never endanger your family due to your compassion. Always keep in mind that criminals are becoming smarter in gaining access. Sharing these home invasion protection tips with all members of your family may save their lives.

GrabAGun provides online guns for sale including concealed carry pistols, concealed carry holsters, tactical shotguns, and other home invasion defense weapons for your home protection needs.

Tips When Buying an AK47 For Sale

ak47 for sale online

GrabAGun’s AK47 For Sale

The AK47 for sale is one of the most produced modern small arms, estimated to account for one out of every five firearms in the world. The AK47 has justifiably earned a reputation for being an extremely reliable weapon under any possible conditions. For those of you selecting your first AK-47 for sale, this guide will assist you in making an informed decision.

The AK-47 Receiver

AK rifles are available in two major receiver groups: milled and stamped. This is where you must decide if you want to go high or low dollar. Just about any milled AK-47 is going to cost more than a stamped model.

A milled receiver begins with a solid block of quality steel and is put through over 100 machining stages until there is a finished monobloc receiver. This intensive mill work is the primary reason a milled receiver on the AK-47 for sale cost more than a stamped. The action is smoother on milled guns, but you can let your budget be the deciding factor as the stamped receiver is just as serviceable as the milled and will most likely cost a lot less.

The stamped receivers are stamped out of a flat sheet of steel and then formed by precision bending until the final receiver is completed. The final work is added such as the trunions, spot welding the bolt carrier welds to the inside, and inserting the heavy rivets that are the stamped AK47 receiver’s hallmark.

Wood or Synthetic

The buttstock, pistol grip, and handguards of the AK-47 for sale are made of one of two materials, wood or synthetic. Either choice is good and it a matter of personal preference. If you are looking for the traditional, you will want to choose wood. You will choose between Soviet black made wood and a U. S. made wood stock set. It is not hard to change stock sets out if you would like to change wood or interchange between synthetic and wood for different use conditions. Synthetics are available in a variety of finishes.

Folding Stocks

The AK 47 has options when it comes to buttstocks other than fixed position stocks. Folding stocks come in under folds, right side folds, and left side folds. AK’s are also available with an AR styled collapsible buttstock. These options are legal in most states, but to be safe it is advised to always check with your state’s gun laws to ensure the stock of your choice is legal before you buy.

Barrel Length

A large number of the AK47 for sale today are 16.1-inches long. However, there are shorter and longer variants. For those novices among you buying your first AK-47, you need to be aware that buying a short barrel AK will land you in the NFA arena and will be restricted from individual ownership unless you purchase the BATFE tax stamp and process the federal NFA paperwork. This can be a very time consuming process, and there are reports of people still awaiting approval 7 months down the road. The tax stamp is a recurring annual fee that you will have to pay to retain your short barreled gun.

AK-47 Accessories

If you are going to use a scope, ensure the model you choose comes with a scope mount. It takes someone familiar with scope mounting to accurately mount a scope. The best advice for a novice obtaining their first AK-47 for sale is to choose a model with the scope already on it or use a gunsmith. The accessories market for the AK-47 continues to grow. Just keep in mind, the more you add will also be adding weight. GrabAGun offers AK 47 accessories as well as AK-47 parts.

Caliber

Select the caliber of choice. Many people associate the AK47 for sale with a 7.62 x 39 caliber. However, the AK 47 is available in several calibers. Do you want the cheapest ammo? Then go with a 7.62 × 39 or 5.45 × 39.

If you are looking for a long range AK-47, choose the .308 Win or the 7.62 × 54R. If you already have or plan to have an AR-15 in 5.56, consider choosing an AK in 5.56 × 45. It will provide the convenience of using the same ammo.

GrabAGun’s AK-47 For Sale

GrabAGun offers the AK-47 for sale. Available in numerous brands and configurations, you are sure to find the model you seek at GrabAGun. Buying The Right Gun Safes

Gun Safes For sale

Gun Safes for Sale

Gun owners have a responsibility to ensure their guns don’t end up in the wrong hands. The factors you will want to consider when selecting gun safes are protection, safety, security, and size.

Those factors are your checklist, and you will need to determine which of these you need in a safe. If you want all the factors in a safe, you look for gun safes that provide all of these factors. If you only want to keep your guns out of the hands of thieves, you will need a safe of heavy gauge steel to deter thieves. You can forego water and fire prevention. If the safety of children is your only concern, the more economical 12 gauge safes will suffice. When you have decided the features you require, the choices can be narrowed down to safes for sale that fill your need.

Factors to Look for in Gun Safes

The features that aid in preventing theft are heavy gauge steel, weight of the safe, the ability to attach the safe to a floor, and the locking mechanism.

Heavy Gauge Steel Safe

Heavy gauge steel is an important deterrent for thieves. No safe is completely burglar proof. The goal is to slow thieves up as most burglars want to run in, grab what they can, and be out within a short time. With steel, the smaller the gauge is, the thicker the steel will be. Inexpensive safes most commonly use 12 gauge steel which is easily entered with common tools.

Choose the best gauge your budget allows and, if it is within your budget, choose at least a 10 or 7 gauge steel. A 10 gauge steel gun safe can weigh 1,000 lbs. or more. Due to the weight of a gun safe, you may prefer to have multiple safes, rather than one large safe. Multiple anchored safes do have the advantage of reducing weight for movement, and decrease the chances of a thief getting all of your guns.

Safe Attachment

Attaching a safe to the floor is another safeguard to deter thieves. This will require holes to be drilled into the floor, and you will have to know how many holes, what size holes and the exact distance between them. Before you buy ensure the owner’s manual provides this information.

Use large washers on the inside of the safe around bolts to prevent thieves from simply ripping the bolts out of the bottom of a 12 gauge safe. Another tip is to attach a 4 × 4 post across the bottom of floor joists and attach the bolts through the 4 × 4 and secure with a nuts. Most homes sub-floors are made of ½ or ¾ inch plywood, and the anchors for a safe will easily pull out of this material. The stronger the anchor, the more time it will take them to succeed.

The Door & Lock

The door and lock are the point at which most burglars will attempt to gain access. Pins are used to lock down the door to the safe. One inch pins are standard in most safes and are generally adequate. Larger and more numerous pins are even better, but will increase the cost of the safe. Higher grade safes will also have pins at the top, bottom, and corners as well.

The type of lock is another factor to consider in securing a safe. Your standard lock will suffice for keeping children out of it. For thieves you need the best lock possible. Electronic locks are popular for convenient and fast access; they are also the root of most problems with gun safes. The most common concern is with batteries, which must be routinely replaced.

Mechanical dial locks last and last, but it can take time to open, a negative if you need fast access for home defense. Key locks are the easiest to use but are no competition for a skilled burglar. Biometric gun safes locks are the most secure, but also require battery power and routine replacement.

Fireproof

If you choose a fireproof gun safe, fire rating will be a critical factor to consider. The majority of today’s fire resistant safes meet basic fire protection standards, with the minimum being able to withstand a 1200º F temperature for up to 30 minutes. This means the temperature inside the safe shouldn’t exceed about 275 degrees during those 30 minutes. At higher cost, a premium safe might be rated at 1200° F for up to 100 minutes. In determining the fire rating of a safe you should consider the response time of your local or attending fire department.
