There is a lot of debate on the Glock 20 vs Glock 40, so we thought we would give you the low down on both to help you know which you might want to pick up for the range. Glock 20 Gen4 Overview

The Glock 20 Gen4 has become one the top handgun choices for backcountry bow hunters, professional guides in Alaska, and anyone else requiring a hard-hitting pistol for predator defense. With a 4.6” barrel, the Glock 20 Gen4 can launch a 200-grain bullet at approximately 1,300 fps and a lighter 135-grain projectile at an impressive 1,600 fps. The real game changer is the 15-round capacity and controllability of the Glock 20.

Compared to something like a .44 Mag revolver, the Glock is faster out of the holster, and follow-up shots are easier to fire quickly and accurately. The 10mm ammo also has less recoil than the .44 Mag. Some will praise the .44 Mag and argue the benefits of the more powerful Magnum cartridge. We get it. The .44 is and always has been an excellent round and is a great option for bear defense.

Where the Glock 10mm pulls ahead for a lot of outdoorsmen is the lighter weight of the pistol compared to a big bore revolver. If you’re backpacking into the backcountry, weight is very important. With the revolver you have 5 or 6 shots and then it’s time to reload– under pressure, as fast as possible. With the Glock 20 you have 15 shots, insert the next mag, then you have 15 more. We have found the Glock 20 in 10mm Auto to be the best compromise of weight, power, capacity, and manageable recoil for many customers and we cannot recommend it enough!

Glock 40 Gen4 MOS Overview

The Glock 40 Gen4 M.O.S. has all the same benefits as the Glock 20 but includes a couple key features that make it more suited to those who plan on hunting with it. The barrel on this Glock 40 is lengthened to 6.02” which provides increased velocity and more kinetic energy. The longer sight radius can help with lining up those longer shots if you are using iron sights exclusively. The Glock 40 MOS also includes the Modular Optic System, which allows you to easily mount an optic to the slide.

There are several advantages to mounting a red dot sight on your Glock 40 for hunting. One of these is that it provides low-light visibility. Even though your iron sights are hard to see in failing light or your vision may not be what it used to be, you can easily see the red dot of your optic and adjust the brightness as needed. Another major advantage is being able to stay “target focused” with a red dot. When using iron sights, you have to line up your sights and then shift your hard focus from the target to your front sight and then break the shot, which takes time. However, a red dot allows you to just put the red dot on the target and then pull the trigger.

Whether you choose to add an optic to your Glock 40 Gen4 MOS or you choose to hunt with the pistol sights, you will have the added velocity provided by the longer barrel. For hunting, this really is the ultimate Glock 10mm!

The Glock 40 MOS combines a longer slide and barrel to deliver improved velocity with a high magazine capacity. It features the Glock Safe Action system which provides a consistent trigger pull from the first to the last round. The Background

The .357 Magnum caliber was first manufactured in the mid-1930s during the gangster/mob era of the Great Depression. It’s based upon the older design of the .38 Special but delivers higher muzzle velocity and energy, making it better for defense. The .38 Special delivers a maximum muzzle velocity of around 1000 fps with approximately 250-300 ft-lbs of force. While this was decent, it couldn’t penetrate light cover. The new, more powerful 357 Magnum was born out of this need, delivering muzzle velocities of 1,000-1,300 fps and a force of roughly 500-700 ft-lbs and penetrating light cover with ease.

The reason we’re covering stainless steel revolvers is because of the durability and flexibility that they offer. In addition to featuring the mechanically simple function, a stainless steel revolver is also extremely resistant to corrosion and rust. This allows more flexibility with the cleaning, usage, and storage of the revolver. It’s also an important consideration for those that live in a more humid or wet climate, as a gun that’s not stainless steel may be prone to rust or corrode quicker.

Another detail worth noting. Since these revolvers are chambered in .357 Magnum, they’re all capable of handling .38 Special and .38 SPL +P rounds as well. This is because normal .38 Special and the +P rounds have the same diameter as .357 Mag but deliver lower pressures. So as a result, all of these revolvers on the list can handle .38 Special and .38 SPL +P rounds.
