The Legend of Colt Python

In 1955, the firearms industry was completely changed when the Colt Python was introduced. Of all the firearms to come out that year, this was the only one with a radically new design. It was a dramatic change from anything Colt had ever done before, despite the fact that its ancestry included the Army Special, a popular .38-caliber DA that had been in the line since 1908. I digress.

The Python was, and is, chambered in .357 Magnum. Now, 357 Magnum had already proven itself as a powerful and dependable round. Plus, it’s far more pleasant to shoot than the .44 Magnum from Smith and Wesson which had come out that same year. However, until WWII, the .357 Magnum had only been offered in the Single Action Army, of which only 525 guns were. Fun fact: when the SAA was reintroduced in 1955, it was in .45 Colt and .38 Special but not in .357 Magnum. I thought that was interesting.

This was Colt’s top-of-the-line model and was originally intended to be a large-frame, .38 Special target revolver. You can see this in the precision adjustable sights, smooth trigger, solid construction, and extra metal. However, since they already had the SAA out, a change was made and it was released in a different caliber. Pythons, you’ll notice, have a distinct appearance due to a full barrel underlug, ventilated rib, and adjustable sights. Another fun fact: Colt initially manufactured Pythons with hollow underlugs but decided to leave them solid so they could work as a stabilizing barrel weight.

The Python was removed from production in 1999, supposedly retired for good. Colt had other ideas. In 2020, a reimagined version of the old classic was brought back to their lineup and has shown to be a massive success.

Colt Python for Sale

If it isn’t obvious, the Python is built on Colt’s legendary Snake Gun legacy. This double-action revolver has returned with a stainless steel barrel, stainless steel alloys, and a re-designed rear sight. There is 30% MORE steel beneath the rear adjustable target sight to give you a stronger revolver and a more robust shooting experience. Factor in a recessed target crown, user-interchangeable front sights, and Walnut grip with the iconic Colt medallion, and you’ll never want to put this down. Truly, this was a revolver designed to be used AND shown off. Like the original, it’s chambered in .357 Magnum, but it does also accommodate .38 Special cartridges. You can even find custom gold-plated Colt Pythons on our site! So, what are you waiting for? Pick up your very own Colt Python from GrabAGun today!

About the AR-15

History

The first AR-15 was developed by the ArmaLite Company. ArmaLite traces its beginnings back to 1950s Hollywood. It was founded by George Sullivan and, originally, the company was focused on weapons design, not manufacturing. The chief architect behind ArmaLite’s weapons designs was a man named Eugene Stoner, who is credited as the original designer of the AR-15 model. In case you haven’t figured out, the AR in AR 15 does not stand for “assault rifle” as many might have you believe. It actually stands for ArmaLite, the original developer of the firearm.

The first weapon designed by the company was the AR-5, a bolt-action rifle with a .22 Hornet round. It was developed as a survival rifle for the flight crew in the Air Force. After that came a replacement for the M1 Garand. ArmaLite developed an AR-10 rifle that, unfortunately, the military did not adopt. However, it set the precedent for what we know today. In 1959, Colt bought the designs for the AR-15 and began producing the firearm. By 1961, the U.S. Air Force began testing the AR-15 Colt was producing, commissioning 8,500 for Air Force use.

TekMat detailing AR15 basics

How It Works

From the start, the AR-15 has been a gas-operated, semi-automatic rifle. Semi-automatic means that every pull of the trigger constitutes one shot. So, as soon as the cartridge is ejected, a new one slides into the chamber automatically, thus the name. Compare that to a pump-action shotgun, where every time you shoot, you have to pump the slide in order to eject the cartridge and begin the next cycle.

Direct Impingement

The type of gas system the AR15 uses is a direct impingement. This is a system that directs gas from the ignited gunpowder of a cartridge to the slide assembly, or the bolt barrier, to cycle the rifle’s action. The thing about a direct impingement system is that it doesn’t use a separate piston, gas cylinder, and operating rod assembly, unlike other traditional gas-operated firearms.

Instead, the pressure from the emitted gas acts upon the carrier and the bolt to cause the firing action. Ultimately, this system makes the overall cost cheaper and the rifle’s weight lighter by decreasing the mass of its operating parts. The only downside to this system is that the breech of the firearm becomes more prone to fouling. (Fouling is that build-up of powder residues due to high temperatures and frequent exposure to moisture)

Standard Facts

A standard AR-15 of today is a lightweight, semi-automatic rifle or carbine fed from a 30-round box magazine. It’s normally chambered in 5.56x45mm that can also fire .223 Remington. I’m using several buzzwords like ‘standard’ and ‘normal’ because the phrase ‘standard AR-15 rifle’ is a little relative. It encompasses all kinds of variants and permutations of the AR15 including the itty bitty 9mm’s with 7-inch barrels all the way to the 22-inch, .300 WinMags, and beyond. For the sake of this post and this post alone, when we’re referring to the AR-15, we’re talking bout the “classic” 5.56mm version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AR-15 an “assault rifle”?

No. An assault rifle is a select-fire, fully automatic weapon (better known as a machine gun. Think UZI or the Thompson Submachine Gun). That in mind, it’s illegal for civilians to own a fully automatic weapon in the United States. Anything like that is only in service with militaries, law enforcement, and/or defense organizations. The AR15 is a semi-automatic weapon and it’s no different, legally or in name, from any other semi-automatic weapon you’d buy or build.

Can I order an AR15 online?

Yes and no. The only part of a AR 15 that’s actually considered a firearm is the stripped lower receiver. All other parts, including the upper receiver, barrel, parts kit, buttstock, gas system, etc. are not considered firearms. That means they can be purchased online and shipped to your home. You don’t need an FFL to make the transfer, not unless you want to. You can find great AR 15 rifle deals–ready to shoot guns as well as parts–at GrabAGun today!

Is the AR-15 good for beginners?

Honestly? Yeah.

When broken down, part by part, the AR-15 is kind of a mediocre firearm. But, put everything together and you’ve got yourself an exceptional rifle. Bonus: it’s incredibly lightweight for its class. Yes, there are several rifles that outperform the AR-15, but in terms of overall performance, there is nothing quite like it.

Beginners will find that it’s easy to handle. The AR15 is considered a soft shooter, meaning there is minimal felt recoil or muzzle rise. On top of it begin lightweight, it has a relatively simple control layout. Most models also feature an adjustable stock to accommodate the shooter’s stature and if the shooter is wearing body armor or backpack straps. Loading is pretty simple and easy to pick up on. Despite that minimal action, it’s fairly accurate and can reach targets several hundred meters away.

In terms of maintenance, the AR15 doesn’t really require frequent oiling and cleaning. Now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever take care of your firearm, but it’s not as high-maintenance as you might think. When the time does come to care for it, you can easily disassemble its base.

Is the AR15 good for hunting?

Yes, the AR15 is lightweight and powerful enough to take down large animals. It’s easy to carry and can certainly immobilize a target. Plus, it’s safer to use due to its “drop safety” feature, something not common among hunting rifles. Harsh weather, rain–you name it and the AR 15 can handle it since the stock isn’t made of wood. Wood, as you know, expands and warps when exposed to moisture. That can cause issues with aiming down the line.

Many do prefer a semi-automatic rifle like the AR15 for hunting since shooters don’t have to adjust their hand positions after every shot. This is critical when hunting pack animals such as coyotes and wild boar where the shooter may need/want to take down multiple animals quickly. That’s much easier to do when you aren’t having to shift positions after each and every shot.

Not to sound like a broken record, but the AR15 has minimal recoil and muzzle creep. When hunting, especially for a first-time hunter, this is a huge advantage. You’re more likely to experience greater accuracy with more time for follow-up shots this way.

Desert Eagle: Guns in the Media

The Most Iconic Gun in the Movies

What would you say is the most firearm to be featured in the media? Glock? Beretta? Well, you’d be wrong. The firearm to be featured in over SIX HUNDRED movies, TV shows, and video games is none other than the Magnum Research Desert Eagle. Playfully coined the “Deagle”, this handgun is perhaps one of the most well-known, most popular, and most easily identified firearms out there. But it’s not just a movie prop. The MRI Desert Eagle is a full-fledged, American-made handgun that you can add to your collection today. GrabAGun is proud to offer the Desert Eagle in our lineup along with other incredible handguns like the Glock 43, the Sig P365 XL, the FN High-Power, and many, many more. Start saving today with unbeatable online gun store prices on the Desert Eagle for sale at GrabAGun.

History of the Deagle

Magnum Research Inc (MRI) has been highly successful, long before its purchase by Kahr Firearms Group in 2010. They claim this is due to their loyal customers, suppliers, dedicated employees, and highly experienced leadership. And honestly, we’d have to agree.

Founders Jim Skildum and John Risdall have been involved with the company since 1979. Both men oversaw the rise of the Desert Eagle Pistol (often referred to as the Deagle) from a concept on paper to a pop culture icon. Over the past 40 years, MRI has continued to improve and expand the Desert Eagle pistol series. Many think this is an Israeli gun, which is just a big misconception.

MRI and IMI

While Magnum Research began manufacturing firearms in Israel, the original Deagle was founded right here in the states–in Minnesota, to be exact by Bernard White. In fact, work on the large-framed semi-auto icon went back as far as the 1970s. Nearly 13 years later, White filed a 14-page patent for the design of a gas-operated pistol with a rotating bolt and twin recoil springs. A short-stroke piston in a gas cylinder under the fixed barrel drives the slide to the rear.

White, unfortunately, lacked the manufacturing capabilities to bring such a firearm to life. So, the design was shopped around with Israel Military Industries (IMI). IMI developed a contract with the American company, Magnum Research Inc (MRI) to finish the handgun and put it into production for the commercial market.

When the original Desert Eagle Mark I first hit the market in 1984, it was advertised as “invented, patented, and marketed” by Magnum Research and “manufactured and developed” by IMI. Available with a 10+1 capacity and chambered in .357 Magnum, this beefy pistol had a 6-inch barrel. It was marketed for hunting, self-defense, silhouette shooting, and general target practice.

In 1995, Magnum Research switched contracts to Saco Defense in Saco, Maine. Only three years later, they would go back to IMI for manufacturing before being placed under IMI’s (then) latest small arms branch, Israel Weapon Industries. Since December 2009, the Desert Eagle has been produced in the US at MRI’s Pillager, Minnesota facility. In 2010, MRI was acquired by Kahr Arms after which, they began to step up the number of US-made guns while reducing their imports. It wasn’t until 2018 that MRI could say that all Desert Eagle pistols were 100% American-made.

Desert Eagle Ad

The Deagle in the Media

By 1985, just one year after the Mark I was introduced, the new gun–with its dominating profile–hit the movies and a thriving career began. That career would span several decades as well as hundreds of appearances on screens small, medium, and large (over SIX HUNDRED). In its inaugural year, the “Deagle” was used by big-gun aficionado Tackleberry in the “Police Academy” franchise, Mickey Rourke in Michael Cimino’s “Year of the Dragon”, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle “Commando”.

Big things were happening for the Mark I, but it went the way of the dinosaur in 1987 only to be replaced by the Mark VII. (What happened to the Marks II through VI? No idea! No one knows!) The Mark VII included .41 Magnum variants with 10 or 14-inch barrel lengths. That extended length was attributed as making the handgun capable of 300-yard shots. In 1991, .50 AE guns came out. Eventually, the Mark VII was replaced by the Mark XIX which is still the standard today.

Why is the Desert Eagle so popular?

In many ways, the Deagle is pretty much the ideal handgun. It’s featured in countless video games and is probably the first thing many of you think of when someone says the word “pistol.” Why is it so popular, though? Well, it’s partially due to the unusually sleek design. Most handguns use a short-recoil or blow-back system, which can make it difficult for newbies to aim. The Desert Eagle, however, uses a gas-operated mechanism that significantly reduces that kick that occurs when firing. The trade-off is the fact that this is a HUGE firearm. Seriously. Try concealing one of these bad boys on your waistband. Dare we say it’s impossible? Just about! The Desert Eagle is very large for a handgun which can also make it a little unwieldy in the hands of someone less adept. That aside, it’s a smooth and fun handgun to play around with at the range.

Desert Eagle in the Movies

As mentioned, the Desert Eagle has been featured in over 600 movies, TV shows, and video games. It’s got the looks and the power to back it all up. The first time I ever saw a Deagle in action was in The Matrix. It’s probably one of the most prolific uses of the handgun to date, followed closely by the toilet scene in Boondock Saints (Or was that just me? It’s probably just me). Honestly, the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s were a fantastic time for action moves as well as the Desert Eagle. Plenty of iconic and cult-classic favorites featured this handgun. Even if it was just one scene, that was enough to drive popularity and sales.

Radical Firearms was already making all AR parts in-house, for a fraction of the usual cost mind you, so they were easily able to put custom AR 15 rifles for sale at affordable prices.
