Dove Hunting Essentials

The world is slowly beginning to open up again—just in time for dove hunting season. The season officially kicks off in September, but before you get out there, it’s important to have all your essentials ready to go.

Shotgun, Shells, and Choke Tubes

Perhaps the most obvious item you’ll need on a dove hunting trip is your shotgun. You’d be surprised how many hunters, new and experienced, get so caught up that they walk out of the house without their gun! The type of gun used will vary from hunter to hunter and there are plenty to choose from. Most will opt for a 12, 16, or 20 gauge shotgun. A 12 gauge is typically the preferred option because of the power and versatility it offers. 20 gauge options are just as popular thanks to the shorter barrel and more manageable size, while a 16 gauge is effective, just not as widely used.

When you’re packing everything up, it can be easy to misplace or overlook something as simple as a box of shotgun shells. Hunters of every caliber have done this at one point. It’s a good idea to bring a variety of shotgun shells with you, including #7, 8, and 9s, depending on your needs. Since you’ll likely be shooting from various distances, having a variety of shells can’t hurt. GrabAGun not only has a wide selection of shotgun shells, but they also provide flat-rate shipping!

Before putting your gun in the car, make sure you have a set of choke tubes or the right choke tube for what you’ll be hunting. Choke tubes allow you to control pattern diameters at different distances. For instance, an open choke is best used in close-range shooting whereas tighter chokes are going to be best suited for longer shots. There is a high chance you’ll be hunting in different areas, meaning your vantage point will change. Investing in different chokes, or a choke with dual positions will allow you to accommodate these changes with ease.

Decoys and Calls

What’s a bird hunting trip without a decoy? The right decoy will allow you to potentially stay in one spot longer, thus reducing the amount of time spent trying to pattern dove fly zones. The more realistic it is, the better! It’s also never a bad idea to study doves’ flight paths in advance. By figuring out things like their water holes or rooting areas, you’ll know where best to place your decoy, increasing your chances of quality hits. GrabAGun has tons of decoy options that can help you snag the best bird of the day on your next dove hunting trip.

As many hunters can attest, sometimes a decoy just isn’t enough and you may need a little extra oomph in the form of a dove call. Dove calls are probably the fastest and easiest way to attract the species of bird you want. Each one is different so you may need two or three to get the job done. When used in conjunction with a decoy, you simply can’t miss.

Dove Hunting Clothing

Camo is a staple amongst shooters of every kind, and comfortable clothing is a hunting must-have. When it comes to dressing for a dove hunting trip, layers are the best way to go. Keep an eye on the weather patterns for the days you plan on hunting. Depending on where you are at, heavy layers may not be a major necessity. Thin shirts or long-sleeved options with a slightly thicker coat will keep you comfortable in the morning and afternoon. Whereas, colder conditions may require more layers with a thicker, or more densely insulated coat. No matter what, you want to aim for options that will offer protection without compromising your range of motion.

A good pair of cargo shorts are an absolute must for any hunting trip. Anything with pockets, mobility, and durability is always a plus. Include a pair of durable, yet comfortable, boots and you’ll be good to go!

Chairs and Cleaning Accessories

When hunting, you’ll likely be crouching or sitting for hours on end. A chair and a cooler can go a long way in making your next hunting experience that much more enjoyable. Like your clothing, it’s best to pick neutral colors or a camo pattern to avoid detection. Finding options that are lightweight and portable is even better. Anything with a matte finish is also ideal as it will prevent any glares or unwanted sightings.

It’s also important to bring along a cleaning bucket. Cleaning buckets are a fast and convenient way to remove the feathers from your doves. This will not only save you time, but it’s also safe and sanitary.

Additional Items

What else could you possibly need on your dove hunting trip? Depending on the time when you’ll be out hunting, you may need yellow tinted lenses for the morning and sunglasses for the afternoon. Regardless, eyewear of any kind is important for your protection. Don’t forget a poncho, as the weather can change quickly. You’ll also want earplugs or headphones, scissors, a shotgun cleaning kit, and a first aid kit. While it’s entirely possible you may not need or use the majority of these items, it’s better to have them with you, just in case.

Last, but certainly not least, always check the local hunting laws, legal hunting hours, approved hunting methods, daily possession limits, protected dove species, and more. These will vary from state to state, so definitely make sure you research all of this beforehand.
