Which is Better? AR-10 Vs. AR-15

“If you think the AR-15 is too much, get the AR-10. That is five fewer ARs”

As two of the most popular and successful guns on the market, the AR-10 and AR-15 have always been pitted against each other. There has been a long lasting debate on whether the AR-10 or AR-15 is “better”, with some saying the power and distance of the AR-10 outmatches the versatility and maneuverability of the AR-15 or vice versa. Let’s break down these ARs and see what the difference is between the two.

Here at GrabAGun, we are looking to match the right gun with our customers needs, including an assortment of the best AR 10s, AR 15s, bulk ammo, AR-10 magazines, and AR-15 magazines available! Get your favorite guns for sale online at GrabAGun!

History of The AR

Many people are under the impression that AR stands for “Assault Rifle”, but in reality it stands for “Armalite Rifle”, for the company at which it was founded. Armalite was established in 1954 when they built the AR-1, a weapon developed for paratroopers. After many variations of this rifle, including the popular AR-7 survival rifle, Armalite eventually built the infamous AR-10.

The AR-10 was created to compete with the AK-47s and M14s used during the Vietnam War. Not only was the AR-10 a smaller and lighter gun to carry, but it was more accurate than other rifles that used gas piston technology. The AR-10 used the direct impingement system which piped gas directly into the receiver, which then cycled into the bolt carrier. Chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, this rifle was a full pound lighter than other military rifles. The long-range capability actually makes the AR-10 a favorite for long-range shooters. Looking for AR 10 or AR 15 rifle deals? Go to GrabAGun.com and shop now!

The AR-10 had plenty of influence in new models of the AR. With the newly developed and lighter 5.56 NATO rounds, there was a request to use this new chambering in a new AR, and thus the AR-15 was born. The AR-15 was way lighter than the AR-10 and used lighter 5.56 NATO ammo. In 1959, Colt bought the rights to the AR-10 and AR-15 to start production for civilian use. The AR-15 has now become one of the most famous rifles in the US with almost 20 million AR-15 style rifles in circulation. Interested in an AR 10 or AR 15 rifle? The AR-10 and AR-15

While most people have a preference for either the AR-10 or the AR-15, both have similar internal functions and external styles. For example, they both have a rotating bolt design, use the same trigger group, are customizable, and many ARs have interchangeable parts. However, the significant difference between the two is the caliber, which leads to differences in things like rifling, weight, and ballistic performance. Today, these rifles are available in a variety of chamberings outside of their initial calibers which can lead to minimal differences even between different AR-10s or AR-15s

Why Should You Buy The AR-10?

Looking at the differences between a .223 Rem/5.56 NATO AR-15 and the .308 Win AR-10, the AR-10 excels at long distance shooting. With heavier ammunition, the AR-10 has a longer effective range. So, this probably isn’t a great home defense weapon unless BigFoot is trying to steal your fridge. While the heavier ammo leads to longer range accuracy, this makes the rifle heavier and the capacity lower. When you shop for an AR-10, you are mostly going to find .308 Win magazines with 20-rounds or lower. AR-10s can also have more proprietary parts depending on the manufacturer, so more research may be required if you are building a rifle instead of buying a complete AR. If you are a hunter, a long range target shooter, and someone who doesn’t mind a heftier weapon, the AR-10 may be the better option for you! Get an AR 10 for sale from GrabAGun along with your bulk .308 Win ammo and spare magazines today!

Why Should You Buy The AR-15?

The AR-15 overall is more popular than the AR-10 and is one of the most popular firearm platforms in the US. The AR-15 is inexpensive as it is easy to shoot. The ammo is cheaper and it is a little easier to find spare parts and mags. There is great interchangeability between different manufacturer’s parts if you are building an AR-15 as well. With a lighter 5.56 NATO round, the AR-15 is usually lighter and you will be able to find higher capacity 30-round magazines. Even though it is considered a shorter range weapon than the AR-10, the AR-15 is still highly effective between 300 and 500 yards. The AR-15 is well equipped for predators and varmints, but isn’t the best for hunting deer or larger animals. It is also less awkward in close quarters, making it a great home defense weapon, and offers more accurate and faster shots. If you are a target shooter, are looking for a home defense weapon, or just need something lighter, the AR-15 could be the better option! Get your AR 15 for sale at GrabAGun today. We have everything you need for an AR 15 at the prices you’ll love!

Which is Better?

At the end of the day, both of these guns are great when performing the tasks that they are made for. For example, the AR-15 is amazing when you are walking long distances or maneuvering on rough terrain. However, the AR-10 is amazing when hunting bigger game or needing to shoot accurately at long distance. Do you enjoy hunting big game or are you looking for a more accurate weapon at 750 yards? The AR-10 is for you. Are you looking for a gun that is easier to shoot, cheaper, and has better maneuverability at ranges under 500 yards? Then definitely get the AR-15. You can go back and forth all day on the pros and cons of these rifles because they truly are two sides of the same coin. So, when it really comes down to it, it is completely up to you and what you are needing in a new rifle. If you still can’t decide which one to get, maybe ask yourself, “why not both?”

What Your Gun’s Action Means: Beginners Guide

Action Guide

A gun can be multifunctional or optimized for a specific purpose. But how well do you know the action behind it? There are multiple options when it comes to the action of your gun. There is single-action, double-action, or both in one! Here is a quick guide on the meaning of each gun’s action and its function. When you find your preference, take action by shopping at GrabAGun. We’ve got revolvers for sale, semi-automatic handgun deals, and ammo to go. Get everything you need, at the prices you want, through our online gun store today!

Let’s break it down. A gun’s mechanism consists of the trigger, hammer, and safety. The type of action is defined by how a gun’s mechanism operates when the trigger is pulled.

Single-Action (SA)

The single-action (SA) trigger is the earliest form of trigger types. The term SA began to be used with the introduction of new double-action revolvers in the mid-19th century. Single-action means that pulling the trigger does one action: It releases the hammer or the striker. If the gun is not cocked, pulling the trigger will do nothing. The hammer must be manually pulled back, and then pulling the trigger will release it. Cocking the hammer will rotate the cylinder bringing a new round in alignment with the barrel. Once it is cocked, the single action trigger must be pressed to fire. The hammer must be continuously re-cocked to fire another round. A single-action pistol will have a shorter, lighter trigger pull than a double-action because the work of pulling the hammer back is already done.

Double-Action (DA)

A double-action (DA) trigger will cock the hammer and release it all in one pull. By repeatedly pulling the trigger, it allows multiple shots to be fired until all rounds have been released. Double-action revolvers can have exposed hammers or a hammer that is shrouded and/or the thumb spur machined off. Double-action will deliver the same pull length and weight with every shot. A double-action firearm will have a longer, stiffer trigger pull than a single-action gun because of the extra step required to cock the hammer with the trigger.

Double-Action/Single-Action (DA/SA)

With a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) firearm, the combination of both mechanisms gives you the best of both worlds. When the gun fires, the cycling slide will automatically cock the hammer to the rear. The following shots will be fired in single-action mode, unless the hammer is manually lowered.

DA/SA often identifies with a semi-automatic. However, when referring to a double-action revolver, it simply means it has the ability to fire in both double- and single-action mode. The trigger function of a DA/SA semi-automatic handgun is similar to a DA revolver, but unlike a DA revolver, only the first trigger pull will be double-action. Every trigger pull after that will be lighter because the slide is re-cocking the hammer after each shot. A DA/SA pistol can be carried with the hammer down on a loaded chamber. By pulling the trigger, it will cock and release the hammer.

About the AR-15

History

The first AR-15 was developed by the ArmaLite Company. ArmaLite traces its beginnings back to 1950s Hollywood. It was founded by George Sullivan and, originally, the company was focused on weapons design, not manufacturing. The chief architect behind ArmaLite’s weapons designs was a man named Eugene Stoner, who is credited as the original designer of the AR-15 model. In case you haven’t figured out, the AR in AR 15 does not stand for “assault rifle” as many might have you believe. It actually stands for ArmaLite, the original developer of the firearm.

The first weapon designed by the company was the AR-5, a bolt-action rifle with a .22 Hornet round. It was developed as a survival rifle for the flight crew in the Air Force. After that came a replacement for the M1 Garand. ArmaLite developed an AR-10 rifle that, unfortunately, the military did not adopt. However, it set the precedent for what we know today. In 1959, Colt bought the designs for the AR-15 and began producing the firearm. By 1961, the U.S. Air Force began testing the AR-15 Colt was producing, commissioning 8,500 for Air Force use.

TekMat detailing AR15 basics

How It Works

From the start, the AR-15 has been a gas-operated, semi-automatic rifle. Semi-automatic means that every pull of the trigger constitutes one shot. So, as soon as the cartridge is ejected, a new one slides into the chamber automatically, thus the name. Compare that to a pump-action shotgun, where every time you shoot, you have to pump the slide in order to eject the cartridge and begin the next cycle.

Direct Impingement

The type of gas system the AR15 uses is a direct impingement. This is a system that directs gas from the ignited gunpowder of a cartridge to the slide assembly, or the bolt barrier, to cycle the rifle’s action. The thing about a direct impingement system is that it doesn’t use a separate piston, gas cylinder, and operating rod assembly, unlike other traditional gas-operated firearms.

Instead, the pressure from the emitted gas acts upon the carrier and the bolt to cause the firing action. Ultimately, this system makes the overall cost cheaper and the rifle’s weight lighter by decreasing the mass of its operating parts. The only downside to this system is that the breech of the firearm becomes more prone to fouling. (Fouling is that build-up of powder residues due to high temperatures and frequent exposure to moisture)

Standard Facts

A standard AR-15 of today is a lightweight, semi-automatic rifle or carbine fed from a 30-round box magazine. It’s normally chambered in 5.56x45mm that can also fire .223 Remington. I’m using several buzzwords like ‘standard’ and ‘normal’ because the phrase ‘standard AR-15 rifle’ is a little relative. It encompasses all kinds of variants and permutations of the AR15 including the itty bitty 9mm’s with 7-inch barrels all the way to the 22-inch, .300 WinMags, and beyond. For the sake of this post and this post alone, when we’re referring to the AR-15, we’re talking bout the “classic” 5.56mm version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AR-15 an “assault rifle”?

No. An assault rifle is a select-fire, fully automatic weapon (better known as a machine gun. Think UZI or the Thompson Submachine Gun). That in mind, it’s illegal for civilians to own a fully automatic weapon in the United States. Anything like that is only in service with militaries, law enforcement, and/or defense organizations. The AR15 is a semi-automatic weapon and it’s no different, legally or in name, from any other semi-automatic weapon you’d buy or build.

Can I order an AR15 online?

Yes and no. The only part of a AR 15 that’s actually considered a firearm is the stripped lower receiver. All other parts, including the upper receiver, barrel, parts kit, buttstock, gas system, etc. are not considered firearms. That means they can be purchased online and shipped to your home. You don’t need an FFL to make the transfer, not unless you want to. You can find great AR 15 rifle deals–ready to shoot guns as well as parts–at GrabAGun today!

Is the AR-15 good for beginners?

Honestly? Yeah.

When broken down, part by part, the AR-15 is kind of a mediocre firearm. But, put everything together and you’ve got yourself an exceptional rifle. Bonus: it’s incredibly lightweight for its class. Yes, there are several rifles that outperform the AR-15, but in terms of overall performance, there is nothing quite like it.

Beginners will find that it’s easy to handle. The AR15 is considered a soft shooter, meaning there is minimal felt recoil or muzzle rise. On top of it begin lightweight, it has a relatively simple control layout. Most models also feature an adjustable stock to accommodate the shooter’s stature and if the shooter is wearing body armor or backpack straps. Loading is pretty simple and easy to pick up on. Despite that minimal action, it’s fairly accurate and can reach targets several hundred meters away.

In terms of maintenance, the AR15 doesn’t really require frequent oiling and cleaning. Now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever take care of your firearm, but it’s not as high-maintenance as you might think. When the time does come to care for it, you can easily disassemble its base.

Is the AR15 good for hunting?

Yes, the AR15 is lightweight and powerful enough to take down large animals. It’s easy to carry and can certainly immobilize a target. Plus, it’s safer to use due to its “drop safety” feature, something not common among hunting rifles. Harsh weather, rain–you name it and the AR 15 can handle it since the stock isn’t made of wood. Wood, as you know, expands and warps when exposed to moisture. That can cause issues with aiming down the line.

Many do prefer a semi-automatic rifle like the AR15 for hunting since shooters don’t have to adjust their hand positions after every shot. This is critical when hunting pack animals such as coyotes and wild boar where the shooter may need/want to take down multiple animals quickly. That’s much easier to do when you aren’t having to shift positions after each and every shot.

Not to sound like a broken record, but the AR15 has minimal recoil and muzzle creep. When hunting, especially for a first-time hunter, this is a huge advantage. You’re more likely to experience greater accuracy with more time for follow-up shots this way.

Guide: Carrying While Jogging

How to Carry While Jogging

Despite the crazy weather this time of year, there is nothing quite as satisfying as completing a run. Runners often find themselves on trails and pathways at odd times of the day with a plethora of interesting cheerleaders along the way—if you know, you know. You also know that there are different, let’s call them threats, on different trails at different times of the day. Naturally, you want to avoid hurting yourself, but you can and may also find yourself stumbling across some creatures you may not want to be around. Skunks? Coyotes? Bears? We’re walking the other way…To avoid catastrophic confrontations, we recommend carrying while jogging to ensure the best experience–and yes, we are talking about a firearm. We’ll talk about why it’s important, what are some alternatives, and what you’ll need in this post. For all your carrying while jogging needs, GrabAGun has you covered. Keep reading to learn more.

Why You Should Carry on Your Runs

Protection, first and foremost. Most runners take the necessary precautions to prevent injury while running, but many don’t think about the precautions needed to keep themselves situationally safe. I mean, have you ever been chased by a startled armadillo on a run? No? Yeah, no I haven’t either…

No matter what, keeping yourself and others safe should be your top priority. Naturally, we recommend carrying a handgun. Whether it be a 9mm handgun or a micro pistol, a small handgun is better than no handgun, in our opinion. If you are comfortable using one, a firearm will guarantee your own safety from nearby predators like bears, coyotes, or a surprisingly determined raccoon.

Carrying While Jogging and Other Options

Whether you decide that carrying while jogging is the way to go or not, having a form of protection with you is of the utmost importance. Naturally, we recommend a 9mm handgun or something similar. They are reliable, rugged, and effective in a variety of situations. Plus, the last thing you want is to be startled with no means of protection. (Ever had the misfortune of surprising yourself and an unsuspecting raccoon at the same time? Adorable, yet, frightening) Let’s take a look at some of the safety options you can take with you on your next run.

taser for carrying while jogging

Tasers

Tasers or stun guns are nice to have but only effective in extremely close quarters. That means someone or something will have to practically be on top of you for either option to be truly effective. What’s more, most people are not adept at using something like this which can lead to unsatisfactory results.

Personal Alarms

If you’ve taken any self-defense class, then you’ll likely know that one of the first, and best, tools to get yourself out of a situation is to sing. Before you ask, no, you’re not expected to actually sing, but instead, make as much noise as possible. Besides, trying to sing while running or even after a run is near impossible. What will help is a personal alarm because, more often than not, attackers, animals, or other threats will turn away when too much noise draws attention to them.

pepper spray for carrying while jogging

Pepper Spray/Mace

One of the most common defense weapons is mace–and for good reason. Outside of a firearm, it’s one of the most effective weapons for stopping a threat. Most cans usually have a decent range allowing users to protect themselves while still keeping a safe distance from whatever is threatening them. Now, many brands make gel formulations that allow for the product to stick around longer, doing more damage while providing ample opportunities for escaping.

Firearms

And of course, our personal recommendation, the firearm. Why are firearms the best weapon to keep while running? With the right usage, they are effective, reliable, and perhaps, one of the best deterrents. It will take time to become proficient, but once you are there, you’ll have a reliable form of protection any day, anywhere, for just about any purpose.

Type of Gun for Carrying While Jogging

So, the question on everyone’s mind: What’s the best handgun for jogging while running? Well, it comes down to a number of factors, but the main things you’ll want to look for is something:

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to conceal
  • Reliable
  • Durable
  • Functional

At the end of the day, you just need something that you are comfortable handling. Spend time at the range for target practice, but don’t stop there. As a runner, you’ll want to make sure you are capable of firing a weapon while moving. Find a tactical range that will allow you to practice moving while shooting so you can truly get a feel for the action. For the best 9mm handgun for sale, GrabAGun is the only place to shop.

Type of Holster

Not all holsters are created equal and carrying while jogging can seem challenging. During the cooler months, it’s probably not that hard, but in the summer? Try finding an easy way to conceal a weapon on your ankle with running shorts. It’s basically impossible. So how do you effectively carry, and conceal, your firearm for a run? Here are a few options.

belly band holster for carrying while jogging

Belly Bands

If versatility is the game, belly holsters are the name. The major benefit to this type of concealed carry is that you can, usually, get away with carrying several types of handguns and magazines fairly inconspicuously, even while running. With the right shirt, virtually no one will know that you are carrying it. The most important thing to remember is to practice drawing and replacing your weapon for the best experience.

Ankle Holster

Sometimes you just have to forgo concealed carrying for the sake of convenience. For carrying while jogging, ankle holsters are one of the more obvious answers. Not only will it take weight off of your hip line (reducing any chance of pantsing yourself!). However, any “concealability” goes out the window when you’re wearing running shorts. What you lose in stealth you make up for in accessibility. This is an option that you may need to try out a few times before deciding.

chest holster for carrying while jogging

Chest Packs

Arguably one of the most effective carrying options, period. If you feel comfortable/capable of running with one, chest packs are the best way to go. You get rapid, easy access, take the weight off your hip, plus you look really cool while wearing one. What’s more, you never have to take your eyes off the target while removing anything from the chest pack.

Practical Running Tips

Be aware of your surroundings

Seems simple enough, but when you’re running it’s very easy to slip into a groove. You’re running your usual trail, only focused on putting one foot in front of the other, and you lose your spatial awareness. If you have to or choose to run alone, stick to well-lighted paths, areas with consistent foot or vehicle traffic (please don’t run in the road, but next to it), and places with good cell reception.

Buddy System

Piggybacking off the previous point, if you don’t the ability to change up your running locations, find someone to run with you. A friend, partner, spouse, or even a four-legged furry friend! The idea of “strength in numbers” isn’t just for giggles. When there are more people, making more noise, you’re less likely to have a chance encounter with something or someone that could harm you.

Sweat Ain’t Sweet

If you run, then you know that no matter what time of the year it is, you’re more than likely going to sweat. All that ammonia, sweat, and dirt can not only make your running gear smell…ripe, but they can also wreak havoc on your firearm. Any external bluing will be ruined and internal steel components can be compromised. Most holsters designed specifically for runners help to keep the firearm away from the body, and sweat, but you should still be cleaning your gun regularly.

Practice Makes Proficiency

You’ll never be perfect with every single firearm, but you can be proficient with the one you choose to run with. Practice as often as you can not just firing your weapon, but drawing it from the holster and replacing it. Learn the basics of cleaning and maintaining your weapon for continuous and reliable use. This will guarantee your constant safety, no matter what.

Concealed Carry Needs: Do I Still Need an LTC in Texas?

open and concealed carry needs

For those living in Texas, you already know that as of September 1, 2021, permitless carry (also known as Constitutional carry) became legal with the passing of HB 1927. This was signed in by Governor Abbott and legally allows anyone over the age of 21 to legally carry a firearm without a permit or license to carry. Does that mean you don’t need an LTC at all? We set out to answer that question and hopefully, we can help you understand the latest update in firearms. Once you are equipped with that knowledge, find the best handgun deals, holsters for sale, ammo online, and all your open or concealed carry needs at GrabAGun!

License to Carry

A license to carry is a gun owner’s documentation that proves you are legally permitted to purchase and carry a firearm. As of 2021, Texas residents are able to carry daily without needing a valid LTC as well. Of course, you’ll still need a holster as well as proper safety precautions like safes and cases. Before answering the question–do you need an LTC in Texas–it’s important to review the law as it stands currently.

Who Can Carry Without a Permit?

All the same rules apply to firearm owners. Only those with clean criminal records and are 21 years or older (or 18 for military personnel) can legally own/carry a firearm. Anyone disqualified under federal law is also restricted from purchasing a gun for sale. In fact, the DPS has listed all the restrictions on its website

Where Can I Carry With/Without a Permit?

The places where carrying a handgun is not permitted have not changed with this new law. Common examples of such places include:

  • A polling place while voting is taking place
  • A government meeting open to the public
  • A courthouse, except when specifically authorized to do so
  • A place where a high school, collegiate, or professional sporting/interscholastic event is being held
  • A racetrack
  • A correctional facility
  • An access-controlled airport terminal
  • An amusement park
  • A bar

To clarify: even if you have a license to carry in the state of Texas, you will not be allowed to openly carry a firearm at locations like those listed above. Concealed carry is a different story. Additionally, private property owners still have the right to accept or refuse patrons carrying handguns. Again, the Texas DPS has a complete list of prohibited places on its website. So…

Do I Still Need an LTC for my Concealed Carry Needs?

The long and the short of it is, despite the new law allowing for permitless carry, obtaining your license to carry is still highly recommended. If you intend to carry daily, it is your responsibility to know the local laws and regulations to carry a firearm, and LTC classes are simply the best place to do that. Whether it be for open carry or concealed carry needs, license to carry classes are invaluable. From them, you’ll learn information about proper care, safety, and storage for your firearm. There are several other reasons to get your LTC as well.

Purchasing a Firearm

With an LTC, the process of buying a firearm is much easier and much faster. Without an LTC, you’ll be subject to a background check for every gun you wish to purchase.

Travel Between States

Many states have something called reciprocal agreements. This, very simply means, “If I can carry in your state, you can carry in mine.” Only 36 states accept the current Texas LTC, so if you are traveling, these are places where you’ll be able to legally continue carrying your gun.

Interactions with Law Enforcement

Police officers in Texas can use anyone’s driver’s license to look up if they have a valid LTC. Without that LTC, depending on the reason why law enforcement has contacted you, it could be a while before things are figured out.

concealed carry needs

Concealed Carry Needs and the LTC

Okay, let’s summarize. As of September 2021, it is legal to openly carry a permitted firearm without a license. However, just because you aren’t necessarily required to get an LTC, that doesn’t mean you should go without. A license to carry potentially grants you better access to places while also protecting you in the long run. Still, at the end of the day, acquiring a license to carry is your choice. Should you decide to get one for yourself, make sure to check out GrabAGun’s online catalog. We have gun deals, ammo online, as well as new arrival Glock handguns for sale and Ruger handguns, daily that you won’t want to skip! Best Daily Carry Ammo

daily carry ammo online

Finding the right daily carry firearm is a personal experience and the same can be true about the ammunition you’ll want to use. It takes time to practice with everything to determine what works and what doesn’t. There are hundreds of thousands of rounds to pick from, so how can you know what is right for your handgun? GrabAGun is here to help! Not only do we have a variety of brands and calibers to pick from, but we also have the tools to help you determine what is best for your needs. To find the best daily carry ammo online, keep reading or check out our website today!

Types of Daily Carry Ammo

If you are just starting to get into daily concealed carry, finding the right ammunition can feel daunting. There is so much information and it’s easy to get off the beaten path. That’s where GrabAGun comes in. We have a large collection of ammo online that you can choose from including options from Winchester, Remington, CCI, Hornady, and more. We’ve also put together this comprehensive guide to help you figure out the best daily carry ammo for your needs. Before we get into what ammunition deals you can get, let’s get into the basics.

The Basics: FMJ vs. JHP

When it comes to daily defense handgun rounds, you’re two best options are Full Metal Jacket rounds (also the title of a fantastic movie) or Jacketed Hollow Point rounds. What’s the difference? We’ll get into that

Unwritten, unspoken rule: use hollow points for carrying/home defense, use full-metal jacket for practice.

Full Metal Jacket Ammo Online

For practice purposes, FMJ is cheaper. It’s easy to find and easy to purchase as bulk ammo. Unfortunately, FMJ is not ideal at the whole, “put the attacker down” point of view. Okay, but what is a full-metal jacket round?

This is a soft lead bullet that’s encased in a harder metal. What’s great about an FMJ round is that, when passing through soft tissue/other stuff, the bullet will retain the majority of its shape. Believe it or not, that’s an upside because, in theory, the bullet will have an easier time retaining its lethality after passing through a barrier. The result is two small holes, usually an entry and an exit wound. However, the downside is that the retention ability of a full-metal jacket bullet increases the risk of over-penetration.

This is why many gun owners choose to get full-metal jacket ammo for sale for practice purposes. Does that mean it can’t be used for home defense/carry? No! For those in more rural areas, where bears and bobcats might be more present, FMJ will offer more protection than the alternative, hollow point ammunition.

Jacket Hollow Point Ammunition

JHP is essentially an FMH bullet with a hole in the tip. Okay, so, there’s actually more to it than that, but you get the idea. But basically, the hole is there to create a weakness. That weakness causes resistance when it hits something squishy. If FMJ bullets retain their shape, then it’s safe to say that JHP bullets do not. Instead, they expand upon target impact and remember that…

Quick physics reminder: With Newton’s Law of Conservation of Energy, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transferred.

Keeping Newton’s law in mind, when a hollow point bullet hits a target, it’s supposed to expand upon impact while all the energy dissipates into the thing you shot. This results, typically, in a much larger wound cavity and no exit wounds, meaning the bullet stops inside the body.

It’s important to note that the hollow-point rounds you see in the movies do not perform the same way in real life. Hollow-points are not some magical death talisman. It won’t send someone flying across a room nor is it an instantaneous “cop-killer”.

Ammo Deals

It’s now time to decide on the caliber that you’ll choose for home defense or for daily carry. Whether you carry a 9mm Sig P365 for EDC or you want to keep a revolver for home defense, there are several ammo options out there.

Best Daily Carry Ammo Online

9mm–The Go To

The most popular defense firearm is a 9mm. It doesn’t matter from which company. It could be a Glock handgun, a Ruger handgun, a Taurus G2C for sale–literally, name the manufacturer and they likely have a tested, trusted, and well-loved 9mm handgun with 9mm ammo to go with it. The fact that the majority of law enforcement officers carry 9mm guns also helps ensure that there is a plentiful supply of this ammunition.

Browse GrabAGun’s collection of 9mm ammo online

.45 ACP–The Tried and True

If knock-down power is what you are after, then .45 ACP is what you need. The standard for 1911 pistols, it’s the best combination of accuracy and stopping power. Because it’s a larger bullet, it ultimately delivers a massive wound cavity. Basically, the larger the bullet, the greater the impact–which is exactly what .45 ACP does.

Select the .45 ACP ammo you need and take advantage of GrabAGun’s flat rate shipping!

.357 Magnum/.38 SPL–Revolvers Are Cool Too

Not everyone wants to carry a typical 9mm around, which is totally fine! Revolvers are a great option for those that might be hiking or entering areas with high wildlife populations. With revolvers, the popular chamberings are .375 Magnum and/or .38 Special. When compared with a 9mm round, either will perform with more force, creating a larger wound cavity. Neither of these can be considered a “one-shot” wonder, but they can absolutely be trusted in serious situations.

Check out our .357 selection for more ammunition online deals

If you need .38 Special ammo online, GrabAGun is the best place to look

.40 S&W–An Oldie But a Goodie

.40 S&W used to be the FBI standard before it was replaced by 9mm. There’s nothing wrong with the round, 9mm just happens to be easier to manufacture at bulk rates. This is a heavy load that delivers a major punch, leaving a massive wound cavity. It’s one of the main reasons that many rely on it for daily ammo carry or for home defense.

Pick up a box or two of .40 S&W ammo online from GrabAGun today

.327 Federal Magnum–More Revolvers

Not the most typical defensive round–because it’s only about a decade old and designed for revolvers–but that doesn’t mean it still isn’t a viable option. This ammo operates at a higher pressure than .357 Magnum and features less felt recoil. .327 Magnum is actually designed specifically for defensive use and can be depended on for daily carry.

Pros and Cons of Strong Side Carry

strong side carry

If you are brand new to the world of concealed carry, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the plethora of information. Between the different modes of carrying, holsters, and more, it can be hard to figure out how it all comes together. So, let’s start with the basics. For a daily carry handgun, you’re going to need a holster. Probably the most iconic option out there is the strong side carry. (Think, Dirty Harry or John Wayne) It doesn’t matter if you are carrying a Glock G19 Gen 5 or a Ruger handgun, a strong side holster is the easiest and the safest route you could possibly take. To learn more about concealed carry benefits and holster deals from GrabAGun, keep reading.

So…What is Strong Side Carry?

This is probably the most obvious question. What does strong side carry mean? Well…

Imagine the body as a clock, with the belly button resting at 12 o’clock. The strong side would be at the 3 or 4 o’clock position on the dominant hip. It doesn’t matter if you are an orthodox or southpaw, strong side carrying is a viable option. What’s great is that there is a little wiggle room in terms of how you carry—meaning, you can use either IWB or OWB holsters with little issue.

Pros

No doubt, other carry trends will go in and out of style, but strong side carry will remain the most popular option out there–and it’s not hard to see why. This carry option is incredibly versatile and comfortable for everyday use with many other concealed carry benefits.

Versatility

Part of the popularity surrounding this carrying type is the versatility it offers. As mentioned, you can carry it inside-the-waistband or outside-the-waistband, but there’s more to it than that. There are far more gear options available for strong side carrying allowing for more variety in clothing.

Comfort

One of the main reasons people choose strong side carry holsters is simply because of how comfortable they are. Unlike appendix carry holsters, a strong side won’t cut in. (Be honest, have you tried to sit down with an appendix carry holster? OUCH!)

Seamless Integration

There is a simple truth in life: if it ain’t easy, it ain’t happening. People are drawn to things that are simple and uncomplicated, which sums up why the strong side carry is so popular.

Easy to Draw

Last, but certainly not least, a major advantage of the strong side carry is how easy it is to draw. That angle and position is a natural draw stroke for most folks. Plus, it makes you feel like a cowboy, and who doesn’t want to feel like a cowboy?!

Want To Save Big?

Cons

Even the most popular carry choice has its downsides. While strong side carry is popular and works for a number of people it, unfortunately, doesn’t lend itself to the concealable aspect of concealed carry. Still, how bad can it be?

Driving = Not Easy

Seriously, have you tried to get in the car with a gun holstered on your strong side? It’s not easy! And trying to draw your firearm while seated and buckled? It’s basically impossible.

OWB Not Easy to Conceal

If concealment is what you are after, then an OWB strong side holster won’t be your best option. It’s kind of like oil and water–they just don’t really mix and you’ll end up being frustrated more often than not.

 IWB Strong Side Isn’t Better…

Did you know there’s a term for when clothing pulls too tight and reveals an IWB strong side firearm? There is and it’s called printing. It’s also one of the major drawbacks to such a carrying option since it kind of defeats the purpose of concealed carry.

OWB strong side holster deal

GrabAGun Holster Deals

For everyday carry, the strong side option is probably one of the safest and easiest ways to go. It’s trusted by millions around the world and for good reason. Not only is it one of the safest carry options out there, but it’s also a reliable way to ensure the security of yourself and others. Before adding a holster to your cart, make sure you’ve got the right handgun for sale that you are looking for. The size of a person’s hands, their strength, and their grip will all impact which firearm will feel right to them. Before you go scanning the web for handguns, take a look at this list of five of the best handguns for beginners.

Beretta PX4 Compact 9mm handgun

First on the list is an ultra-safe Beretta. Firearm safety is among the first considerations for new gun owners shopping handguns for sale. And the Beretta PX4 Compact ranks high for safety, thanks to its manual safety and decocker, which must be disengaged to fire. This feature eases first-time shooters’ minds. Additionally, the weapon features a double-action trigger. This means that there is no single-action for any shot, and the hammer or striker must be in the down position. Though its highlight is safety, this weapon is still great to use on the range or to carry for self-defense.

Glock 19 Gen 5 9mm

It’s impossible to talk about handguns without mentioning the Glock 19 Gen 5. There is a reason these weapons are one of the mostly widely used firearms on the market. They work in nearly every situation, and many owners say they are the most reliable handgun they have ever owned. This Glock is a double-action compact 9mm handgun. Glocks are known for their ability to be customized, and this handgun is no different. Out of all of the best handguns for beginners, Glock is always a safe bet. Ruger 5430 LCRX

Because everyone is different, a list of handguns that focused on only 9mm wouldn’t be complete. That’s why the Ruger Gen4 also makes our list – well, that and it’s an ideal choice for people who want a revolver as their first handgun. The stainless steel barrel doesn’t weigh down this firearm, which will be less than 14 oz. in your hands.  Granted, the recoil on this weapon might be too much for new shooters to handle. But if you can handle that, this would make a great first handgun for your collection.

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm

While not strictly designed for it, Smith & Wesson handguns are known for their self-defense prowess. This weapon is manufactured with quality ergonomics that are ideal for both right- and left-handed shooters. The Smith & Wesson M&P was made with specifications set to the standards of law enforcement, so you know that the people who are protecting civilians utilize the same caliber of equipment that you will with this handgun. The strength of the weapon is not just in the reinforced polymer chassis, but also in the dedicated men and women who use it.

Springfield XD 9mm

This full-sized 9mm is a quintessential version of the classic 9mm model. The Springfield XD’s 4-inch barrel has the accuracy and handling you want from a standard-sized pistol. This weapon is one of the safest on the market. The ease of operability derives from the striker status and loaded chamber indicators, which make the user aware through touch and feel that the weapon is being cocked and loaded. Combine that with its firing pin block safety, and you have a handgun designed to prevent unwanted and accidental discharges. Its classic design, durability, and safety make this firearm one of the best for beginning shooters. It’s also one you may have for a lifetime.

With each of these handguns, you get two vital aspects that every owner wants: safety and dependability. Though these weapons are not cheap handguns, you cannot put a price on a safe and reliable firearm. Do your research, test fire a few, and then make a purchase based off of what is right for you.
