Grabagun’s Ammo Guide Part 3: The Best Rifle Ammo

One of the oldest and most versatile categories of firearms, rifles have been around for centuries and have many different applications. For activities like hunting, plinking, shooting targets, shooting long-range, or shooting competitions, rifles, as well as rifle ammo, provide the range and accuracy you need.

As with every category of firearms, there are lots of different choices of ammo for rifles. There are different calibers, brands, and types of rounds that are better suited for different types of shooting. Some of the top brands we’ll be looking at include Sig Sauer ammo, Winchester ammo, Remington ammo, Federal ammo, and CCI ammo. Additionally, there are several different types of bullets that can be purchased, each with a different application in mind. These are the main categories that we’ll cover today:

Common Rifle Ammo Types

• Full Metal Jacket (FMJ ammo) – A lead bullet that’s fully encased in a copper jacket. They can be round or flat-nosed depending on the caliber, and they’re typically used in target and range shooting. They punch a clean hole through a target and are not recommended for defense purposes, as they can continue to travel out of an exit wound.

• Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP ammo) – A lead bullet with a hollowed-out point and a jacket on part of the body of the bullet. This jacket helps keep the bullet together and maintains good velocity and trajectory while in flight. The hollowed point of the bullet allows it to expand and stop once it hits a target, making it a great choice for self-defense and hunting applications.

• Boat Tail Ammo (BT) – These rounds have feature a bullet with a tapered base that looks similar to the shape of a boat. This tapering allows the bullet to fly with more accuracy and stability.

Now that we’ve gotten that context out of the way, we’ll look at some of our most popular rifle ammo. While this doesn’t cover every conceivable caliber, we have tried to cover some of the most popular ones. 22LR Ammo

Despite being the smallest caliber on our list, the .22lr round is still wildly popular among shooters. Handgun Ammo: What You Need To Know

If you’re like most gun enthusiasts, you constantly want to expand your knowledge of firearms. Collecting them is what you like to do, but knowing about them gives you an edge over your competition. And nothing is better than having bragging rights among your fellow marksmen. Knowledge and understanding of your firearms is not limited to just the weapon itself: it extends to everything your weapon needs to function successfully. A major part of that is its ammunition. With a well-rounded understanding, you can be confident when you buy ammo, reload supplies, or reload bullets.

The Anatomy of Firearm Ammo

Because ammo plays such an outsized factor in accurate firings, let’s take a look at some of the handgun ammo for sale. Most handgun ammo can be broken down into four major components: case, bullet, powder charge, and primer. The case holds the bullet in front of the powder charge so that once the primer ignites the powder it will be positioned to exit the barrel of the weapon in a straight and accurate path.

The caliber of ammo correlates directly to the firearm it will be shot from. The internal diameter of a weapon’s barrel is referred to as the caliber, just as the external diameter of a bullet is.

If you’ve been around several types of firearms, you’ve probably noticed that each uses a slightly different variation of bullet. Shotguns use shells or slugs, rifle bullets tend to be long and thin, and handgun rounds tend to be shorter and wider than rifle ammunition. Though rifle ammunition can be found in the same caliber, the barrel length and the amount of pressure each gun uses to operate changes what type of ammunition you need.

Factors That Determine Force of Ammo

The barrel and gas pressure from combustion are critical to the firing process. The pressure from ignition of the gun powder creates the force propelling the bullet. There are two key velocities to keep in mind: muzzle velocity and bullet velocity. Muzzle velocity is the rate at which ammunition leaves the muzzle. The mass of the bullet, its drop in elevation, and velocity when leaving the firearm calculated together equal bullet velocity. The type of ammo that can, and should, be used for each weapon depend on these and other variables.

In general, muzzle velocity for a handgun is less feet per second (FPS) than for a rifle. Due to this issue, bullets often have to make up their effectiveness another way.

Increase Weight of Bullet

To increase the weight, you need to elongate the bullet. The issue with this is muzzle velocity will often drop. Though longer, heavier bullets sound effective, they have the potential to come out too slow.

Increase Length of Barrel

When this happens, the convenience of an easy-to-carry side arm diminishes. Keeping its size to something with a barrel eight inches or smaller tends to be most efficient.

Increase The Bullet Caliber

Increasing the bullet caliber makes the pressure generated from firing exert more pounds per square inch on the bullet. Remember that the caliber must be able to fit within the barrel of your weapon. This method will create larger holes in your targets and might not be a viable option if you are hunting small game, since you may completely destroy it.

Alternative Bullet Designs

Manufacturers offer a variety of case and shell designs that alter how ammunition reacts on impact.

Increase Operating Pressure

Increase the operating pressure of the cartridge. There are plenty of variables that go into this; be sure to check with your state’s regulations on what is acceptable.

Gunpowder

Improve the gunpowder used with your bullet. Technology is constantly advancing, and our firearms and ammunition are no exception. Perhaps with further advances, we might start to see a shift from the traditional short and fat style of handgun ammunition.

Which Caliber is Better? .223 Vs. 5.56

It occurs commonly when a buyer chooses an AR-15 for sale chambered for .223 caliber and expects to shoot 5.56 ammunition in it. After all, many manufacturers actually print both calibers on the rifles, and it is in the manual that came with the rifle. So it is okay, right?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The 5.56 will fit into the .223 chamber but, beyond this, the 5.56 in a .223 chamber is going to create problems. The cartridges may look the same, but the 5.56 Mil-Spec is hotter ammunition than .223. That is to say, the 5.56 has a higher chamber pressure. The chamber on the .223 is actually smaller, though not enough to prevent it from being inserted. It is small enough that it prevents the 5.56 case from expanding as it would in a 5.56 chamber.

What’s The Problem?

The firing of 5.56 ammo in a rifle chambered for .223 causes primer blow back to enter into the receiver decreasing reliability, as well as an increase in failures to eject spent cases. That is due to the hotter load of the 5.56. You may even have to use a rod down the barrel to remove the casing. Firing Mil-Spec ammunition may also crack the receiver posing a real hazard to the shooter and everyone nearby. It is far safer and provides greater reliability to purchase an AR-15 for sale chambered for 5.56 caliber ammo to begin with.

Different Chambers

Technically, you can fire 5.56 ammunition in a rifle chambered for .223, but why ruin the rifle and endanger yourself and others? If you want to use 5.56 Mil-Spec, buy a rifle chambered for 5.56. Basically, there are three types of chambers for AR-15 family of rifles.

The first is the Mil-Spec 5.56 chamber used in the M16 and M4.
Second is the .223 chamber commonly found in the AR-15 rifles.
Third are the .223 Match chamber, commonly used in AR-15s by competition shooters.

The common .223 chamber are manufactured to Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute Specifications (SAAMI). This chamber is ever-so-slightly smaller and tighter than Mil-Spec 5.56 chambers.

Match Chamber

The match chamber is the preferred chamber for professional competition shooters. Match chambers are not chrome lined.

The preferred weight of ammunition for match shooters and snipers is 77 grains and above. This ammo is slightly longer and lighter than AR ammunition. Using this grain of ammunition is not a problem in a rifle with a match chamber, but if you try to use it in the common .223 chamber problems occur due to the extra length. The extra length causes spillage of powder on the receiver and magazine when ejecting an unspent cartridge. To avoid the problems that may cost you a competition, purchase a match caliber .223 AR-15 for sale.

Mil-Spec Chamber

Mil-Spec 5.56mm chambers are always chrome lined in M16s and M4s for military use and typically are for the AR-15 equivalents. The 5.56mm Mil-Spec is slightly larger than common .223 SAAMI spec. This is due to the 5.56mm Mil-Spec being loaded hotter and having a higher chamber pressure.

Whereas it is highly discouraged to use 5.56 in a common .223 chamber, it is allowable to shoot the .223 ammunition as well as the 5.56 out of a rifle chambered for the 5.56 caliber, without any of the reliability or safety concerns of a .223 chamber. Just keep in mind, the .223 ammunition may not provide quite the accuracy at long distance as the 5.56 ammo. The .223 caliber ammo is slightly smaller and doesn’t fire as hot or with as much pressure. Plus the bore of the 5.56 is slightly larger. This advantage prevents the problems that may occur when ejecting a live cartridge, as can occur in a rifle chambered for .223.

Which Chamber Should I Buy?

If you are considering the purchase of an AR15 for sale, you may be wondering which chamber you should buy. If you are only going to be firing SAAMI ammunition, you can choose a common .223 AR-15 for sale. You should not fire 5.56 in a common .223 chamber.
