Types of Daily Carry Ammo

If you are just starting to get into daily concealed carry, finding the right ammunition can feel daunting. There is so much information and it’s easy to get off the beaten path. That’s where GrabAGun comes in. We have a large collection of ammo online that you can choose from including options from Winchester, Remington, CCI, Hornady, and more. We’ve also put together this comprehensive guide to help you figure out the best daily carry ammo for your needs. Before we get into what ammunition deals you can get, let’s get into the basics.

The Basics: FMJ vs. JHP

When it comes to daily defense handgun rounds, you’re two best options are Full Metal Jacket rounds (also the title of a fantastic movie) or Jacketed Hollow Point rounds. What’s the difference? We’ll get into that

Unwritten, unspoken rule: use hollow points for carrying/home defense, use full-metal jacket for practice.

Full Metal Jacket Ammo Online

For practice purposes, FMJ is cheaper. It’s easy to find and easy to purchase as bulk ammo. Unfortunately, FMJ is not ideal at the whole, “put the attacker down” point of view. Okay, but what is a full-metal jacket round?

This is a soft lead bullet that’s encased in a harder metal. What’s great about an FMJ round is that, when passing through soft tissue/other stuff, the bullet will retain the majority of its shape. Believe it or not, that’s an upside because, in theory, the bullet will have an easier time retaining its lethality after passing through a barrier. The result is two small holes, usually an entry and an exit wound. However, the downside is that the retention ability of a full-metal jacket bullet increases the risk of over-penetration.

This is why many gun owners choose to get full-metal jacket ammo for sale for practice purposes. Does that mean it can’t be used for home defense/carry? No! For those in more rural areas, where bears and bobcats might be more present, FMJ will offer more protection than the alternative, hollow point ammunition.

Jacket Hollow Point Ammunition

JHP is essentially an FMH bullet with a hole in the tip. Okay, so, there’s actually more to it than that, but you get the idea. But basically, the hole is there to create a weakness. That weakness causes resistance when it hits something squishy. If FMJ bullets retain their shape, then it’s safe to say that JHP bullets do not. Instead, they expand upon target impact and remember that…

Quick physics reminder: With Newton’s Law of Conservation of Energy, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transferred.

Keeping Newton’s law in mind, when a hollow point bullet hits a target, it’s supposed to expand upon impact while all the energy dissipates into the thing you shot. This results, typically, in a much larger wound cavity and no exit wounds, meaning the bullet stops inside the body.

It’s important to note that the hollow-point rounds you see in the movies do not perform the same way in real life. Hollow-points are not some magical death talisman. It won’t send someone flying across a room nor is it an instantaneous “cop-killer”.

Ammo Deals

It’s now time to decide on the caliber that you’ll choose for home defense or for daily carry. Whether you carry a 9mm Sig P365 for EDC or you want to keep a revolver for home defense, there are several ammo options out there.

Best Daily Carry Ammo Online

9mm–The Go To

The most popular defense firearm is a 9mm. It doesn’t matter from which company. It could be a Glock handgun, a Ruger handgun, a Taurus G2C for sale–literally, name the manufacturer and they likely have a tested, trusted, and well-loved 9mm handgun with 9mm ammo to go with it. The fact that the majority of law enforcement officers carry 9mm guns also helps ensure that there is a plentiful supply of this ammunition.

Browse GrabAGun’s collection of 9mm ammo online

.45 ACP–The Tried and True

If knock-down power is what you are after, then .45 ACP is what you need. The standard for 1911 pistols, it’s the best combination of accuracy and stopping power. Because it’s a larger bullet, it ultimately delivers a massive wound cavity. Basically, the larger the bullet, the greater the impact–which is exactly what .45 ACP does.

Select the .45 ACP ammo you need and take advantage of GrabAGun’s flat rate shipping!

.357 Magnum/.38 SPL–Revolvers Are Cool Too

Not everyone wants to carry a typical 9mm around, which is totally fine! Revolvers are a great option for those that might be hiking or entering areas with high wildlife populations. With revolvers, the popular chamberings are .375 Magnum and/or .38 Special. When compared with a 9mm round, either will perform with more force, creating a larger wound cavity. Neither of these can be considered a “one-shot” wonder, but they can absolutely be trusted in serious situations.

If you need .38 Special ammo online, GrabAGun is the best place to look

.40 S&W–An Oldie But a Goodie

.40 S&W used to be the FBI standard before it was replaced by 9mm. There’s nothing wrong with the round, 9mm just happens to be easier to manufacture at bulk rates. This is a heavy load that delivers a major punch, leaving a massive wound cavity. It’s one of the main reasons that many rely on it for daily ammo carry or for home defense.

Pick up a box or two of .40 S&W ammo online from GrabAGun today

.327 Federal Magnum–More Revolvers

Not the most typical defensive round–because it’s only about a decade old and designed for revolvers–but that doesn’t mean it still isn’t a viable option. This ammo operates at a higher pressure than .357 Magnum and features less felt recoil. .327 Magnum is actually designed specifically for defensive use and can be depended on for daily carry.

Title I vs. Title II Firearms

Handguns and ammo

Whether you are newly interested in firearms or have a deep passion for the industry, you’ll find that the amount of information about pistols and rifles for sale online is vast. There are terms, classifications, and much more that can make it difficult to know where to begin. If this is your first time looking at firearms for sale, you’ll likely hear terms such as Title I and Title II being thrown around. To understand what Title I and Title II firearms mean, the best place to start is at the beginning.

Disclaimer: We at GrabAGun are not lawyers and this article is merely trying to differentiate between Title I and Title II. If you are planning to purchase Class 3 firearms, make sure to read all the laws and consult a local lawyer if necessary.

Defining Title I and Title II

It starts all the way back in 1934 when the National Firearms Act (NFA) was first passed. This was a congressional act that gave the federal government the ability to impose an excise tax on the manufacture and transfer of certain firearms, as well as the ability to mandate the registration of firearms. In a nutshell, it’s because of this act that private citizens can’t purchase a fully automatic weapon and must obtain a federal tax stamp for any item classified as Title II. More detail about what a Title II firearm for sale looks like will be explained later on.

Later, the Gun Control Act of 1986 (GCA), commonly referred to as Title I, was passed. It imposed stricter licensing and regulation while establishing new categories of firearms and prohibiting the sale of firearms or ammo to felons. However, because of how restrictive it was, another act was promptly passed that same year, the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA), ultimately revising many of the provisions under the GCA. For example, under FOPA, the interstate sale of long guns is allowed, even if it’s on a limited basis. Interstate sale means that ammunition can be sold across state lines (i.e. someone purchasing ammo for sale in Texas even though they live in Georgia). Ammunition can also be shipped through USPS under FOPA, and the requirement for record-keeping of non-armor piercing ammo sales is allowed. You can even order ammo online and have it shipped directly to your home.

Overall, federal regulations are still imposed and necessary for the sale of firearms. So what is the difference between a Title I and a Title II firearm?

What is a Title I Firearm?

The definition of a Title I firearm is pretty straightforward. According to the GCA and FOPA, this is any factory standard pistol, rifle, revolver, or shotgun. These can be purchased, owned, and built by any citizen who isn’t prohibited by the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

Pistols and Handguns

Title I, semi-automatic handgun

This can be anything from a 9mm handgun to a concealed carry pistol for sale. No tax stamp is required to purchase or own a Title I handgun, but, according to federal laws, you do have to be 21 years of age or older, when purchasing thru an FFL like GrabAGun, you must also pass an FBI background check.

Find a semi-automatic handgun for an affordable price today!

Rifles

Title I, semi-automatic rifle

The barrels of Title I rifles must be longer than 16-inches to maintain their Title I  classification. This includes options like hunting rifles or other tactical rifles for sale. If you are considering getting a rifle, you’ll also want to pay attention to the stock to stay within the regulations.

Browse GrabAGun’s collection of rifles for sale

Revolvers

Title I, revolver

Revolvers are a great addition to any firearm collection. They are fun to shoot at the range and there are even a few models that are great for EDC. Most revolvers comply with Title I specifications with the exception for revolvers modified to shoot fixed shotgun shells. Those are considered part of the “any other” grouping, mentioned later on.

Take a look through all the revolvers GrabAGun has to offer

Shotguns

Title I, shotgun

A Title I shotgun might include over-under shotguns, home defense shotguns, or hunting shotguns. Any barrel 18-inches or longer won’t require a tax stamp and will keep its Title I classification.

Pick up the shotgun you need from GrabAGun today

What is a Title II Weapon?

As defined by the NFA, Title II weapons, also known as Class 3 weapons as the following:

  • Machine guns
  • Silencers/suppressors/mufflers
  • Short-barreled rifles
  • Short-barreled shotguns
  • Destructive devices

Additionally, there is a catch-all group of devices that aren’t exactly firearms and aren’t exactly explosives. The best way to establish a Title I from a Title II firearm is by determining the barrel length, which is measured from the end of the muzzle to the front of the breechface.

Any device considered a Class 3 weapon must have a $200 ATF stamp, for which you have two options to acquire one. If you are transferring a Class 3 firearm to an FFL, you’ll need to fill out a Form 4 application. If you are registering a new NFA item, then a Form 1 will be required. Between the applications and another federal background check, most Title II devices for sale have an 8-12 month waiting period.

GrabAGun’s Class 3 Guide

Machine Guns

According to the NFA, a machine gun is defined as “any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.” The definition was expanded to include any frame, receiver, and/or combination of parts intended to make a machine gun.

Short-Barreled Shotguns

Also known as an SBS, a short-barreled shotgun is defined as a shotgun having a barrel of less than 18-inches, or a weapon made from a shotgun with an overall length of less than 26-inches. The latter is often referred to as a “sawed-off” shotgun.

Short-Barreled Rifles

The NFA defines a short-barreled rifle (SBR) as a weapon designed to be fired from the shoulder and fire one bullet at a time through a rifled barrel. It is a rifle with a barrel of less than 16-inches or a weapon made from a rifle with an overall length of less than 26-inches.

Note: Weapons with folding or telescoping stocks are measured with the stock unfolded, as intended for use. Weapons with detachable stocks are measured with the stock detached.

Destructive Devices – Explosive Ordnance

A destructive device is any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas, including bombs, grenades, rockets, missiles, mines, and similar devices. This definition has been broadened to include parts intended for making such a device.

NOTE: While explosive ordinances are classified as NFA firearms, no state allows for their ownership with or without a gun trust. GrabAGun does not stock or sell them in any capacity.

  • Examples:
    • Claymore mines
    • Improvised explosive devices (IED)

Destructive Devices – Large Bore Firearms

As defined by the NFA, Large Bore Firearms are any projectile weapon with a bore diameter greater than half an inch (.50 Caliber). It includes most shotguns, especially ones classified as “combat shotguns,” as well as devices not intended or not likely to be used as a weapon. This includes flare launchers with non-weapon rounds or line throwing devices.

Antique firearms are exempt if they are “not likely to be used as a weapon.” They must have been manufactured before 1898 and may not use conventional ammunition, such as Flintlock pistols.

  • Examples
    • The Anzio 20mm Rifle
    • Flare launchers with anti-personnel rounds

Silencers/Suppressors

A suppressor is any device that can be used for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm. The definition was expanded to also include any combination of parts intended for use in assembling or manufacturing a firearm silencer.

Revolver Speed Loaders

The iconic revolver is loved by shooters around the world. But it does have some negative qualities. One of the biggest problems people have with revolvers is their slower reload times. To combat this, revolver speed loaders were invented.

There are three main types of speed loaders currently on the market: the basic speed loader; full-moon and half-moon clips; and speed loaders. Each type has its own pros and cons, and often it is more the preference of the user than one choice being hands-down better than the other two . Here is a quick review of the different types of revolver speed loaders.

Basic Speed Loader

These loaders are designed for specific revolvers, so there are plenty to choose from. They are made to quickly reload the full cylinder at once. When you only have 5-6 shots before a reload, these all-out, all-in loaders can significantly cut the time it takes you to reload. These loaders are considered to be magazine loaders due to the way they fully stock the firearm much like a magazine does a pistol. The fast and reliable capabilities of these loaders do have their downsides, though. Due to their size, they take up considerable room in your pockets. There are speed loader carries, but if you are trying to carry concealed, this is yet another thing you need to keep hidden. Likely the most apparent downside is that the loaders are not universal. If you are using two different calibers and types of revolvers, you will need to own a different speed loader for each.

FullMoon Clips and HalfMoon Clips

These loaders are thin discs that can hold six (for the full moon) and three (for the half-moon) rounds to be easily loaded. These clips can fit in a closed cylinder with the ammunition, so to reload your revolver gun you only have to eject your spent cartridges and cycle in a fresh clip. The half-moon clip applies the same concept, only it removes and adds three rounds at a time. Compared to the other loaders, these clips tend to have the fastest load times of the bunch. There are some drawbacks, though. First, not all revolvers accept moon clips. Additionally, if your firearm does take a moon clip, you need to be sure that the clip can hold the caliber bullet for your firearm. For half-moon clips, a degree of accuracy is needed when loading to make sure your first three rounds begin at the start of your clip; if you fail to load the cylinder in this manner, you may eject several rounds prematurely. It is important to note that moon clips are more comfortable for carrying in your pocket than traditional speed loaders.

Speed Strips

Somewhat resembling an open magazine, speed strips are clips that can feed revolvers one to two bullets at a time. These strips can be easily carried in your pocket. More importantly, they are generally universal. That is to say, if your revolver uses a .45 caliber, then the speed strip needs to hold that type of ammunition and will be compatible with any revolver that takes those rounds as you are not placing anything other than the rounds inside the firearm. Furthermore, since speed strips only load one to two bullets at a time, you do not run the risk of wasting any rounds by discharging unspent rounds prematurely, as with half-moon clips. One of the biggest downsides to using a speed strip is it requires more practice to become quick at reloading your firearm. Your fingers must move in a succinct and dexterous fashion to accurately and efficiently load your firearm. However, practice with your revolver is how you get better with it – both for shooting and loading.

Each of these options has its benefits and its drawbacks. Practice with your revolver, try out each speed loader in the place you will carry it, and think about the situations in which you will find yourself needing to quickly and accurately reload. All of the above options are viable; it is up to you to find the speed loader that is best for you and your revolver. American Classics – Smith & Wesson Revolvers

Sometimes it takes some good old-fashioned American ingenuity to create an icon like Smith and Wesson revolvers: Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson are two prime examples of that statement. These two New Englanders formed a partnership in 1852 with the goal of creating a lever-action repeating pistol that utilized a self-contained cartridge. Financial difficulties would plague the company during its early years, forcing the partners to sell the company to another little-known manufacturer called Oliver Winchester.

The partners would not be deterred by their initial setback, and in 1856 Smith & Wesson would again produce a revolver aimed at firing the Rimfire cartridge they had manufactured in 1854. It was the first of its kind to fire fully self-contained cartridges. A patent would buy Smith & Wesson a few years to improve their product, leading to the creation of the Model 3 American. The original large caliber cartridge revolver, the Model 3 had two big market clients: the United States government and Russia.

Smith & Wesson thrived for decades, until Horace Smith retired at the age of 65. D.B. Wesson, now the sole owner of the organization, would continue the work he and his partner had started. In the late 1800s, he introduced a line of hammerless revolvers. Most notably, however, was the following Smith & Wesson introduction: the Model 10. The Model 10, or .38 Military & Police, has been in continuous production since it was first introduced.

The 20th Century would also see some iconic revolvers introduced, including the .357 Magnum. From there, S & W would manufacturer the Model 39, the first American-made double action auto-loading pistol.

Smith & Wesson Revolvers Today

The company has undergone some changes over the decades, but they still hold try to their core values and ideals. Many of the Smith & Wesson revolver models from the 20th century can still be found for sale today, though in an updated version of their predecessors. That timeless aspect of the brand has caused gun stores and online gun stores to continue to carry a vast inventory of the Smith & Wesson brand. Let’s take a look at some of the favorites you might find when looking for revolvers for sale.

Smith & Wesson Model 10 Blued .38 Special

Smith and Wesson 10 Blued .38 SPL 4-inch 6Rd
One of the longest running models in production, the Model 10 is a true classic. The S&W Model 10 .38 Special is as much a part of firearm history as it is American history. The wooden grip and steel frame symbolize how far the revolver has come and how yesterday’s materials are still some of the best options for today’s firearms. If the past is an indication, the Smith and Wesson Model 10 will continue to be produced for decades to come.

Smith & Wesson Model 586.357 Magnum

Smith and Wesson Model 586 Classic Blued .38 SW 4" Barrel 6-Rounds

Another revolver that has withstood the test of time is the .357 Magnum. This is their Model 586, a single/double action medium-sized revolver. Like many other S & W’s, the Smith and Wesson Model 586 retains the wooden grip that many collectors are looking for. Six rounds are ready to be fired out of the 4-inch barrel at the touch of a trigger. The modern version is every bit as fierce as its earlier renditions.

Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum

When people see this firearm, it often evokes memories of Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry. There is a reason this firearm strikes fear into people, and it is not just from that iconic movie. Today, it features a 6.5-inch barrel, carbon frame, and a double action. It’s hard to find a revolver you will like more. The Model 29 is a true stand-out among pistols.

An Iconic & Diverse Gun Manufacturer

Though revolvers have been – and will continue to be – the staple of the Smith & Wesson name, the company realizes that it needs to branch out. So now when you are looking for a handgun for sale, Smith & Wesson will also be able to provide more equipment produced from the same manufacturer to fulfill all of your handgun and accessory needs. If you’re looking for revolvers for sale, check out GrabAGun’s selection for some of the updated versions of classic S&W revolvers, as well as all the accessories you need to help amplify your next experience with your revolver.

How Revolvers Came to Be

The Colt name is nearly synonymous with revolvers. Many people belive Samuel Colt’s revolver is the first of its kind. He is a big reason we have cheap revolvers for sale today, but was he the person who invented the weapon? A deeper look into history reveals that Samuel Colt might not have been the first person to use a revolver, but rather simply the first person to patent the weapon for manufacturing.

Present Day Revolver

Modern day revolvers, like the Rhino, are complex firearms that have the same basic revolving cylinder mechanism that is its namesake. Today, revolvers fire bullets from the bottom chamber rather than the top which increases both reload times and accuracy. The cylinder is a more hexagonal shape for a more compact weapon that helps meet the demand of the concealed weapon community.

Late 1900s

By this time, the revolver has long been a staple of law enforcement. Many officers still carry this weapon rather than a Glock due to its simple mechanics. Advanced polymer technologies were introduced to offer more lightweight weapons. The recoil that is absorbed is higher and the weapon is sturdier to handle repeated firings. The range of cartridges used is also at an all-time high, with ammo such as the .22 rimfire, .38 special, .357 Magnum, .45 Colt, and .500 Smith and Wesson to name a few.

Samuel Colt and the 1800s to mid-1900s

In 1836, Samuel Colt received the patent for the Colt revolver. His design featured a revolving cylinder containing five to six bullets. The firearms were all manufactured with the cap-and-ball technology of the time. The 1846 Mexican/American War saw the U.S. government ordering 1,000 Colt revolvers and gave rise to Colt being able to mass produce his product by opening what was the world’s largest privately owned arms factory at the time. By the time of the Civil War, the Colt revolver was one of the world’s best-known weapons. Revolver sales increased exponentially due to Samuel Colt.

During the 1850s-60s, manufacturers toyed with combining machine guns and revolvers into hybrid weapons that used large capacity circular chains to load ammo into the barrel. These were early forms of the chain gun, which itself spawned a new line of weapons. In the 1940s, manufacturers introduced the trigger-cocking double action as well.

Revolvers Pre-Samuel Colt

This is the point at which many knowledgeable readers might say that the weapons discussed are not actually revolvers. However, each of the firearms outlined below use the key component that defines a revolver weapon: a cylinder use to store ammunition which is loaded into the barrel of a weapon and fired.

In 1718, James Puckle devised a tripod-mounted weapon that utilized an eleven-shot cylinder. It was operated by a crank mechanism and exhibited many of the same qualities we see in modern revolvers (except this version was not handheld).

Looking back even further unearths several weapons that all utilize a revolving chamber. In the late 1500s, German weaponsmiths had crafted both the shoulder-length revolving rifle and a hand-held revolving arquebus. These early Revolvers would occasionally catch the wielder’s hand on fire from leaked powder and emissions.

Earliest Known Revolver

The earliest known example of a revolver came with the original one-shot weapons of the 1500s. Granted, these firearms were limited by their ability to reload and were not as valuable as the revolvers of today. Revolvers for sale in the modern market have little in common with their archaic ancestors. However, the lineage draws on these early European designs. The debate continues as to the precise creation date of what we refer to as a revolver, but the fact remains that there were several stages of development for producing what became the modern-day revolver.

.357 Magnum Guns For Sale

357-magnum-guns-for-sale

The .357 revolver cartridge debuted on the firearms scene back in 1935 when it was first introduced by gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson. Based upon the .38 Special cartridge, the .357 became the first Magnum cartridge, and was introduced as the world’s most powerful handgun among guns for sale at the time.

For 20 years, it was the only Magnum. Eventually, the .44 Magnum and the 9mm surpassed the .357 caliber . Nevertheless, it remains popular today for its stopping power and reliability.

History of .357

The Gangster activity of the prohibition era spawned the use of early bulletproof vests, which defeated any pistol ammunition of the time. Until the development of the .357 Magnum. The .357 was born out of law enforcement’s need for an advantage over the criminal element.

The Colt .38 Super Automatic was the first pistol ammo that was able to penetrate the car doors and ballistic vests that the gangsters and bootleggers used for cover. The .357 was developed by extending the .38 Super Automatic casing by 1/8 inch allowing room for additional powder. This extension allowed it to be used in rifles and it became known as a dual use round.

.357 Magnum Pistols

The .357 Magnum pistols, and later the .44 Magnum’s, popularity declined with the development of smaller guns chambered in 9mm using smokeless powder. This was due to the 9mm abilities to produce a higher velocity in a smaller cartridge, providing smaller and lighter guns for modern guns for sale.

The .357 IMI Desert Eagle was the first semi-automatic pistol to fire the .357 Magnum cartridge. Today’s law enforcement often use the .357 pistols as a backup weapon, but not as their primary. The .357 remain popular guns for sale among many citizens for self-protection, security jobs and sports.

The .357 SIG, developed in 1994, was designed to mimic the performance of 125 grains .357 Magnum loads fired from 4 inch barreled revolvers in a cartridge designed for semi-automatic pistols. It performs very closely to the .357 Magnum but, in a semi-automatic, it provides an increased capacity. The Texas Highway Patrol became the first government agencies to use the .357 SIG cartridge in 1995. Today many government agencies and law enforcement officers use the .357 SIG caliber.

A Great Caliber for Self-Defense

The .357 Magnum makes an effective self-defense pistol. While there are other handguns with an even greater impact in these factors, the .357 remains more than adequate. The fact that it produces less recoil than other more powerful handguns may be an advantage for those shooters who have difficulty maintaining accuracy with recoil. For these shooters, the .357 pistols can provide ample stopping power in a handgun they are able to control.
