CZ Scorpion Christmas Gun Deals

CZ has produced some of the most popular, most sought-after firearms in the industry. Starting with aircraft machine guns before moving on to military and civilian arms, CZ has always manufactured high-quality products. One of the most popular is the CZ Scorpion Carbine. This is a PDW for sale that you can easily find, at a great price, at the GrabAGun Christmas sale!

CZ Scorpion Features

The CZ Scorpion Carbine is built on the submachine platform. It features a 16.2-inch barrel that’s fitted with either a compensating muzzle brake or a faux suppressor, built specifically for CZ-USA by SilencerCo. It’s also fit with the factory’s folding adjustable stock. In fact, it has a number of US-made parts that make it fully 922(r) compliant. The best feature of the Scorpion Carbine? The newly-designed forend, covered in M-LOK attachment points, keeps the profile slim while still being big enough to swallow most pistol-caliber suppressors.

With low-profile, aluminum adjustable sights and a Picatinny rail, you’ll be able to customize this to your liking. It also features ambidextrous controls, a non-reciprocating charging handle that’s also interchangeable to make the trigger reach-adjustable to your needs. This is a carbine that will adapt with you and to your needs effortlessly.

Deer Hunting Essentials: 2021

deer hunting

Deer hunting is not just exhilarating—it’s incredibly rewarding. There is no greater thrill than taking down a high-point buck or doe. To do that, however, you need the right tools and experience. That’s where GrabAGun comes in. We provide hunters of every experience with the right equipment to have an enjoyable experience. Through our store you can find everything from tactical shotguns for sale to ammo online, all at affordable rates. In this post, we broke down all the deer hunting essentials you’ll need before, during, and after a big hunting trip. Let’s get into it.

Pre Deer Hunting Essentials

If this is the first year you’ve decided to go deer hunting, there are a few things to get out of the way beforehand. First and foremost, start by checking your local laws regarding hunting limits, the duration of the season, and the types of weapons you are allowed to use. Next, you’ll need to pay for your hunting license. You cannot hunt in the United States without a valid license. With it, you are legally allowed to hunt during a specific time in whichever state you live. If you are going to be hunting out of state, you will need to purchase a license for the area you’ll be located.

Note: Many areas have a cap on how many licenses and permits are issued each season. Permits are different from licenses, allowing individuals to hunt specific animals on private or public land. You don’t need a permit to hunt, but you absolutely need a license.

Once you have your licenses and permits, the next thing to determine is the “bag” limit. A “bag” limit refers to how many deer (antlered and antlerless) you are allowed to bag and tag. Limits will vary based on location, time, and other factors. Tags can come in a package deal with your license or be purchased over the counter in most outdoor supply stores.

Last but not least, you’ll need to decide which season you’ll be hunting in. Your hunting season is determined by your location and will help you decide which weapon you choose to use. Archers typically have the first pick with their season starting in September for most areas. After that, muzzleloaders and other firearms are next in line. So how do you know which weapon is best for you?

deer hunting essentials: bow hunting

Choosing Your Perfect Weapon

Deer hunting requires very different equipment compared to something like duck or dove hunting. In those instances, you need a firearm that can disperse a large number of pellets at varying distances. With deer hunting, however, you need a singular blow to hit accurately at a long distance. For that, hunters have a few options to choose from, including:

Crossbow/Bowhunting

For bigger game like deer, bowhunting is a much sought-after weapon. Unlike dove or duck hunting, deer hunting provides larger, more stationary targets that an arrow can hit. This is not necessarily the best method for beginners, but it certainly is an enjoyable one once you get the hang of it. When you’re packing, don’t forget extra bow releases in case something happens!

Muzzleloaders

For dynamite long-range power and accuracy, muzzleloaders are the only way to go. Not only are they inexpensive, but they also provide unmatched power. It only takes one good shot to take down a high-point buck, and this firearm can do that. This is an option for experienced hunters who want to stop a deer in its tracks. Muzzleloaders for sale shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, and they won’t when you shop with GrabAGun

Rifle/Shotguns

Hunting rifles and shotguns are what you will most typically find in the field, specifically long-range rifles and bolt-action shotguns. Whichever you choose will be determined by the time when you go hunt, your location, and other factors. Long-range rifles for sale will obviously provide the most accurate shots from further distances. Bolt-action rifles are just as common amongst hunters, providing incredible power and accuracy. If knock-down power is what you are after, then a shotgun is what you will need. Whether it be semi-automatic or a pump-action shotgun, you won’t be missing a shot with either. GrabAGun has hunting rifles and tactical shotguns for sale and you don’t want to miss out on our prices.

With your firearm, you’ll also need ammo. It’s unlikely that you’ll need more than a box or two the day of, but it never hurts to have a few extra on hand for target practice. For any semi-automatic rifle, you want to look for ammunition that blends high-velocity distances with weight retention for powerful impacts. Brands like Winchester, Hornady, and more produce high-quality ammo at affordable rates.

Pick up a box of rifle ammo online with flat rate shipping from GrabAGun!

We also have plenty of shotgun ammo for sale here

Practice, Practice, Practice

Regardless if you are a new or experienced hunter, it never hurts to take the time to practice at the range. While the conditions aren’t going to be the same, getting used to setting up shots can do wonders for your performance in the field. Start by setting targets up at 25-yards and work on placing shots in the same area. Once you’ve got a grasp of it, move the target back in 25-yard until you reach somewhere between 100 and 150-yards. These are perfectly respectable distances for new hunters. What helps is picking up bulk ammo so you can practice without worrying about wasting precious rounds that you might use in the field.

Day of Deer Hunting Essentials

Nothing is quite as exhilarating as waking up the day of a deer hunt. The night before is the best time to pack up everything. You don’t want to be fumbling around in the dark trying to find your permit or gear bag. Believe us when we say even some of the most experienced hunters have left the house without their gun on more than one occasion!

But we understand. For your first trip, it can feel overwhelming to figure out what you need and what you don’t. It can result in overpacking, especially for first-time hunters, which is why we put together a general checklist. Items you’ll need the day of a deer hunt include:

  • Permit
  • First aid kit
  • Hunting knife
  • Weapon of choice
  • One or two boxes of ammunition
  • A blaze orange hunting cap or vest
  • Appropriate camouflaged cold-weather gear (depending on the climate)
    • Hat, gloves, shirts, jackets, waterproof boots, rain jacket, cleaning kit, etc.
  • Scent control/scent attractant
  • Treestand/blind
  • Binoculars

This isn’t an exhaustive list. In fact, there are a few extras that you can also bring with you, including items such as a safety harness for blinds, LED flashlights, a trail camera, odorless bug spray, a rangefinder, and even a walkie-talkie for convenience. Get all of this and more items like ammo online or a quality rifle for sale from GrabAGun today!

Post Deer Hunting Essentials

At the end of your hunt, you will need to make sure that any deer you have taken down are properly tagged. As soon as that is done, you can either take your deer somewhere to be dressed or start the process yourself. Whether you are hunting on private or public land, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Mind Your Manners

  • Be respectful
    • Whether you are hunting on private land, public property, or your own land, be respectful of where you are. Don’t leave any trash or used shells behind. Not only can it spook deer for future hunters, it’s just not cool.
  • Safety is the highest priority
    • New and experienced hunters alike must remember that safety should always be their number one priority. Never shoot above the horizon, toward homes, or populated areas, no matter how far away. The safety of yourself and others should always rank higher than bagging a deer.
  • Common courtesy
    • If you have the opportunity to hunt on someone’s private land, it’s never a bad idea to offer any meat you catch to them. While there is no rule, spoken or unspoken, this is a common courtesy that many hunters follow.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are an experienced hunter or this year will mark your first official hunt, a checklist for all your items is a must. It’s easy to get lost in the hustle of packing up everything that you end up missing important items. While your list shouldn’t be a mile long, it also shouldn’t be so short that you end up leaving all your essentials behind. When you need all your deer hunting essentials, including deer scents, hunting rifles, ammo online, and more; check out GrabAGun. We have everything you need plus things you may not have even thought of!

Elk Hunting: Bow versus Rifle

There is a long-standing debate as to the best weapon of choice for elk hunting: the bow or the rifle. When you’re face to face with a 700-pound bull, you want to trust whatever weapon is at your side to get the job done. This is why we’ve compiled the top advantages and disadvantages of using a bow versus a rifle for elk hunting. We know there are plenty of crossbows and rifles for sale out there, and this list will help you choose what is best for your next hunt.

Elk Bowhunting

Elk bowhunting is a challenging sport that requires a high skill level and countless hours of training. It takes not only time but also patience to perfect your archery skills to takedown a full-size, adult bull. Once you’re comfortable with a bow, however, elk hunting becomes an exhilarating test of skill and knowledge. After all, when you get the shot right, a bow’s take-down power is incomparable.

Browse GrabAGun’s huge archery selection here!

Advantages of Bowhunting

  • Elk bowhunting seasons are usually quite a bit longer as compared to rifle hunting seasons. Bowhunting requires a high level of skill, so the season can afford to be longer while still maintaining a healthy elk population.
  • Depending on your location, you might have more opportunities to practice before your hunt. All you need is a private location, such as a backyard, with 50 yards or more of space. This is much easier than heading to the nearest gun range.
  • You have more opportunities for elk encounters when bowhunting. Many archery seasons align with elk’s breeding season, also known as the rut. Not only does this occur before the rifle season, but you’ll also be hunting when elks—especially large bulls—are at their most active.

Disadvantages of Bowhunting

  • There is no room for error and inaccuracies could lead to unethical practices. For example, a miscalculated shot with your bow might hit your target, but instead of a clean kill, you could leave a long-lasting wound. This defeats the purpose of a quick, one-shot takedown.
  • The range for bows is around 40 yards. This means you’ll have to get pretty close to your target for a successful, effective shot.
  • It is difficult to fire a bow while sitting or lying down. In order to fire effectively, you must keep a still and steady upper body when aiming and releasing your shot. This can be tiring, especially after walking miles tracking herds.

Elk Hunting with a Rifle

There’s nothing quite like scanning the horizon in hopes of finding an elk herd. The challenge of finding those worn-out, post-rut bulls is even more exciting. This is exactly what you get when experiencing elk hunting with a rifle. Hunters spend months perfecting their gear, searching for that perfect rifle for sale to add to their collection, just to take part in this experience.

Advantages of Rifle Hunting

  • It is less physically demanding to hunt elk with a rifle as compared to bowhunting. You can fire your rifle while sitting, standing, or even lying down. Further, you can take pressure off your body by utilizing the ground to steady yourself and your weapon.
  • Your range automatically increases with a rifle—by several hundred yards. Your rifle’s scope enables you to scan large areas of land at greater distances without moving a muscle. Additionally, you can take your shots from much farther away, which negates the need to spend extra time and energy tracking for a close-range shot.
  • Although precision and accuracy are important, a misfire or accidental shot is still more likely to take down a full-size elk as compared to misfiring a bow. Further, it is easier to take a quick follow-up shot to correct any mistakes for a clean, ethical takedown.

Disadvantages of Rifle Hunting

  • Hunting elk with a rifle might seem easier, and while it is great for beginners, it still takes time and consistency to perfect your shot. Shooting a rifle is not always an easy task, so it is important to spend time at the range before your hunt.
  • It is more popular to hunt elk with a rifle, so you will be at a disadvantage with crowds. Additionally, the season for hunting elk with a rifle is shorter than with a bow, which means you might not have as many opportunities to bring home your prized bull.
  • Although your range increases when shooting with a rifle, you don’t get to experience being up close and personal with the animals and environment. Hunting elk with rifles is a long-range experience.

Title I vs. Title II Firearms

Handguns and ammo

Whether you are newly interested in firearms or have a deep passion for the industry, you’ll find that the amount of information about pistols and rifles for sale online is vast. There are terms, classifications, and much more that can make it difficult to know where to begin. If this is your first time looking at firearms for sale, you’ll likely hear terms such as Title I and Title II being thrown around. To understand what Title I and Title II firearms mean, the best place to start is at the beginning.

Disclaimer: We at GrabAGun are not lawyers and this article is merely trying to differentiate between Title I and Title II. If you are planning to purchase Class 3 firearms, make sure to read all the laws and consult a local lawyer if necessary.

Defining Title I and Title II

It starts all the way back in 1934 when the National Firearms Act (NFA) was first passed. This was a congressional act that gave the federal government the ability to impose an excise tax on the manufacture and transfer of certain firearms, as well as the ability to mandate the registration of firearms. In a nutshell, it’s because of this act that private citizens can’t purchase a fully automatic weapon and must obtain a federal tax stamp for any item classified as Title II. More detail about what a Title II firearm for sale looks like will be explained later on.

Later, the Gun Control Act of 1986 (GCA), commonly referred to as Title I, was passed. It imposed stricter licensing and regulation while establishing new categories of firearms and prohibiting the sale of firearms or ammo to felons. However, because of how restrictive it was, another act was promptly passed that same year, the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA), ultimately revising many of the provisions under the GCA. For example, under FOPA, the interstate sale of long guns is allowed, even if it’s on a limited basis. Interstate sale means that ammunition can be sold across state lines (i.e. someone purchasing ammo for sale in Texas even though they live in Georgia). Ammunition can also be shipped through USPS under FOPA, and the requirement for record-keeping of non-armor piercing ammo sales is allowed. You can even order ammo online and have it shipped directly to your home.

Overall, federal regulations are still imposed and necessary for the sale of firearms. So what is the difference between a Title I and a Title II firearm?

What is a Title I Firearm?

The definition of a Title I firearm is pretty straightforward. According to the GCA and FOPA, this is any factory standard pistol, rifle, revolver, or shotgun. These can be purchased, owned, and built by any citizen who isn’t prohibited by the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).

Pistols and Handguns

Title I, semi-automatic handgun

This can be anything from a 9mm handgun to a concealed carry pistol for sale. No tax stamp is required to purchase or own a Title I handgun, but, according to federal laws, you do have to be 21 years of age or older, when purchasing thru an FFL like GrabAGun, you must also pass an FBI background check.

Find a semi-automatic handgun for an affordable price today!

Rifles

Title I, semi-automatic rifle

The barrels of Title I rifles must be longer than 16-inches to maintain their Title I  classification. This includes options like hunting rifles or other tactical rifles for sale. If you are considering getting a rifle, you’ll also want to pay attention to the stock to stay within the regulations.

Revolvers

Title I, revolver

Revolvers are a great addition to any firearm collection. They are fun to shoot at the range and there are even a few models that are great for EDC. Most revolvers comply with Title I specifications with the exception for revolvers modified to shoot fixed shotgun shells. Those are considered part of the “any other” grouping, mentioned later on.

Shotguns

Title I, shotgun

A Title I shotgun might include over-under shotguns, home defense shotguns, or hunting shotguns. Any barrel 18-inches or longer won’t require a tax stamp and will keep its Title I classification.

What is a Title II Weapon?

As defined by the NFA, Title II weapons, also known as Class 3 weapons as the following:

  • Machine guns
  • Silencers/suppressors/mufflers
  • Short-barreled rifles
  • Short-barreled shotguns
  • Destructive devices

Additionally, there is a catch-all group of devices that aren’t exactly firearms and aren’t exactly explosives. The best way to establish a Title I from a Title II firearm is by determining the barrel length, which is measured from the end of the muzzle to the front of the breechface.

Any device considered a Class 3 weapon must have a $200 ATF stamp, for which you have two options to acquire one. If you are transferring a Class 3 firearm to an FFL, you’ll need to fill out a Form 4 application. If you are registering a new NFA item, then a Form 1 will be required. Between the applications and another federal background check, most Title II devices for sale have an 8-12 month waiting period.

GrabAGun’s Class 3 Guide

Machine Guns

According to the NFA, a machine gun is defined as “any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.” The definition was expanded to include any frame, receiver, and/or combination of parts intended to make a machine gun.

  • Examples
    • M16 Rifle
    • Registered drop-in-auto-sear (RIDAS) for an AR-15

Note: GrabAGun does not stock or sell any firearm that is completely automatic.

Short-Barreled Shotguns

Also known as an SBS, a short-barreled shotgun is defined as a shotgun having a barrel of less than 18-inches, or a weapon made from a shotgun with an overall length of less than 26-inches. The latter is often referred to as a “sawed-off” shotgun.

  • Examples:
    • Mossberg 590A1 Class III Parkerized 12 Ga 14-Inch
    • Kel-Tec KSG 12 Ga 13.5-Inch Barrel

Take a look at GrabAGun’s SBS for sale

Short-Barreled Rifles

The NFA defines a short-barreled rifle (SBR) as a weapon designed to be fired from the shoulder and fire one bullet at a time through a rifled barrel. It is a rifle with a barrel of less than 16-inches or a weapon made from a rifle with an overall length of less than 26-inches.

Note: Weapons with folding or telescoping stocks are measured with the stock unfolded, as intended for use. Weapons with detachable stocks are measured with the stock detached.

  • Examples:
    • Springfield Armory Saint Edge SBR
    • A semi auto Glock with a shoulder stock

Browse GrabAGun’s SBR for sale here

Destructive Devices – Explosive Ordnance

A destructive device is any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas, including bombs, grenades, rockets, missiles, mines, and similar devices. This definition has been broadened to include parts intended for making such a device.

NOTE: While explosive ordinances are classified as NFA firearms, no state allows for their ownership with or without a gun trust. GrabAGun does not stock or sell them in any capacity.

  • Examples:
    • Claymore mines
    • Improvised explosive devices (IED)

Destructive Devices – Large Bore Firearms

As defined by the NFA, Large Bore Firearms are any projectile weapon with a bore diameter greater than half an inch (.50 Caliber). It includes most shotguns, especially ones classified as “combat shotguns,” as well as devices not intended or not likely to be used as a weapon. This includes flare launchers with non-weapon rounds or line throwing devices.

Antique firearms are exempt if they are “not likely to be used as a weapon.” They must have been manufactured before 1898 and may not use conventional ammunition, such as Flintlock pistols.

  • Examples
    • The Anzio 20mm Rifle
    • Flare launchers with anti-personnel rounds

Silencers/Suppressors

A suppressor is any device that can be used for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm. The definition was expanded to also include any combination of parts intended for use in assembling or manufacturing a firearm silencer.

  • Examples:
    • Just about any suppressor for sale at the moment

Check out the silencers and suppressors GrabAGun has to offer

Any Other Weapon – AOW

The NFA defines this catch-all category as “any weapon or device capable of being concealed on a person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive.”

  • Examples
    • A pistol with a forward grip
    • A cane gun

5 of the Best AR-15 Manufacturers on the Market

Though there isn’t a clear cut AR-15 rifle that stands above the rest, there are several manufacturers that outperform their competitors. Ask most gun owners and they will attest to the qualities of certain brands over others. But everyone has their own favorites, which is part of the reason ARs are so damn popular. Something we all love about the AR is their variety. You can customize an AR to make it unrecognizable from the stock product.

Many people say that MIL-SPEC makes the AR. That seems to have adjusted to be more of a marketing ploy rather than an accurate representation of the firearm. There are some criteria and specs that you should look for when you want to find an AR-15 for sale. Some of those might include: M4 feed ramps, a high pressure test, gas key that is appropriately staked, the chamber and bore are both chrome-lined, and they are chambered for the 5.56mm NATO. There are plenty of other factors that define quality, but these are a start in what to look for when selecting your ideal firearm. So based off of those criteria, along with general consensus on what makes an ideal AR-15, here is a list of five of the best AR-15 manufacturers on the market.

Barrett

Since the company is known for initiating some common trends in the AR-15 world, it is only fitting to have them lead the list. Though not an overly old company, dating back to 1982, Barrett has made an impact on the industry. They are credited with making the first shoulder-fired .50 BMG rifle. They are also credited with taking industry standards for an AR15, bringing all those specifications into their model, and producing some of the world’s best AR-15s.

Colt

Colt Firearms M4 Carbine 5.56 NATO / .223 Rem 16.1" Barrel 30-Rounds

Colt
might have defined early specifications for what an AR should be. Often being at the forefront of technology, they continue to provide commercial grade AR-15s that are almost identical to the military M4. So when you read MIL-SPEC on a Colt AR, it’s a damn good chance that you are getting products worthy of our armed forces. Just because you’ve been doing something for a long time doesn’t mean you will consistently be good at it, but Colt defies that theory by producing industry-defining AR-15s.

Daniel Defense

Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say. And when you need high-quality AR-15 parts and can’t get them, you start your own company to become a leading producer or top-tier AR-15 rifles and AR 15 accessories — at least, that’s what Marty Daniel did when he founded Daniel Defense. Their AR-15 line has become a staple of the market, impressing thousands of gun enthusiasts with their performance-grade finishes. Additionally, Daniel Defense prides itself in crafting many of their own parts in house. That means the sights, rails, stocks, and flash suppressors will often be made by the same company providing the kickass AR.

Heckler and Koch

With origins dating back to supplying firearms to the German military in 1956, it is easy to see why H&K has become trusted with the MIL-SPEC standards most people want in their AR. The HK416 has been making military headlines for years. H&K excels at taking tried-and-true firearms like the MR556 and crafting versions for the general public. The real ingenuity of their rifles comes from their proprietary gas system, which is based off of a pusher rod. Though often a little bit pricier than some of their counterparts, H&Ks are worth the cost.

Smith & Wesson

AR-15 Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport II 5.56/.223 Rem 16" Barrel 30-Rounds w/ Red Dot

Another company that needs no introduction, Smith & Wesson has provided quality firearms for generations. Their AR-15s are no different. They are the dependable, quality rifles that we have come to expect from the S&W name. When you purchase a Smith & Wesson AR-15, you’ll also have access to many of the key details that firearm owners want in their typical AR. It’s hard to have a list of quality firearms without including a S&W.

Now that you know some of the brands, you’ll want to start looking for the best gun deals. Purchasing an AR 15 with gun financing is a good option that gives you the flexibility you need to pay for the AR as you build the capital for one. Many of the ARs on this list have a higher price tag than other firearms. But no matter which of these trusted brands you choose, you can rest assured you’re purchasing a high-quality AR15. Visit Grab A Gun today to find your AR-15.

6 Reasons You Should Own a Ruger 10/22

Ruger 10/22 Carbine Black / Hardwood Stock .22LR 18.5" Barrel 10-Rounds

Though there is an endless debate on which is the world’s most popular firearm, no one can disagree with the popularity and prominence of the Ruger 10/22. Widely accepted as a must-have weapon, the Ruger 10/22 rifle can be found in gun cases all across America. But what makes this firearm so prevalent? Here are six of the reasons you should own one yourself.

Customizable

Most firearm owners want a gun that is individual. Their own weapon. The easiest way to do that is to customize it with aftermarket accessories and transform it into the high-tech, ultra-accurate machine of your dreams. The amount of Ruger 10/22 accessories on the market is a big reason people flock to this firearm. It is easy to alter the 10/22 so much that the finished product looks nothing like the stock weapon. Best of all, it isn’t insanely difficult to install most of the aftermarket accessories yourself, which leads to the next plus of the 10/22 Ruger.

Easy to Work On

A big seller for the Ruger 10/22 is how easy it is to work on this firearm yourself. The prior knowledge needed to assemble and disassemble it is minor compared to some other weapons. Also, the tools required aren’t elaborate and are ones you would commonly find in your garage or gun case. Routine cleanings and maintenance shouldn’t be much of a problem, considering how easy it is to work on this weapon. While you are working on it, you might discover some interesting parts, like the magazine.

Rotary Magazine

A feature that sets the 10/22 Ruger apart is its magazine. Though not one-of-a-kind, you would have to do some serious searching to find another manufacturer that produced the internal, 10-round rotary magazine that is inside the 10/22. The easiest place to find one would be in the Tommy Guns from the early 1900s. Though the magazine doesn’t necessarily outperform other firearm magazines, it is a cool feature to make your weapon more unique.

Good Starting Firearm

Something else that is cool about the 10/22 is its accessibility. Nearly anyone can use one. It has very low recoil so children or weaker individuals won’t be intimidated by the weapons kick. Something else that is a positive, especially for first-timers, is how quietly the weapon shoots compared to higher calibers. Granted, you still will have some of both, but each are mild compared to many other firearms on the market. Speaking of the market, that brings us to the next point.

Accessibility

Being a .22 caliber weapon is an indication that you will have access to plenty of ammunition. This round is the most widely produced, which means two things: it will be abundant and cheap. Keep in mind that because of this, there will be some poor quality rounds made, so be on the lookout for those. But it isn’t just ammunition that is widely found, but the range of accessories that we previously talked about. You can do a simple search and find dozens of gun stores loaded with .22 accessories and upgrades. It seems nearly everyone has Ruger 10/22 parts for sale. And once you have it completed decked out the way you want, then you can shoot it, which brings me to my final point.

Fun to Shoot

After all is said and done, it comes down to the simple fact that this weapon is a hell-of-a-lot of fun to fire. The low recoil means you can spend hours on the range. The cheaper ammunition means you can put countless rounds through it without breaking the bank. The upgrades you can put on it means you can hit your targets from farther away. You can bring your kids with you and they can have their turn on it as well. All-in-all, the 10/22 might be a low caliber, but it’s hard to find a weapon that is more fun to shoot.

6.5 Creedmoor vs 308 Winchester – Which is better?

It’s nothing new for a company to introduce a rifle cartridge, tons of them try it and like restaurants 90% fail in the first year. What is exciting is when a round has so much potential in less than a decade it changes the entire rifle game. The 6.5 Creedmoor was one of those rounds. It came to life in 2008 from a little ammo company we know and love called Hornady.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a rifle round that can be chambered in short action and semi-automatic rifles like the AR-10. It’s a direct competitor to the classic 308 Winchester. The 308 has been in the service of sportsman since the 1950s. It’s also a short action rifle round that is the AR 10’s original caliber. For the longest time, it was the king of full powered short action rifle rounds.

Which is better?

Effective Range

The 308 Win and it’s military cousin the 7.62 NATO, have long been the choice of military and police tactical shooters. It hits hard and has excellent penetration. It’s great in a semi-auto or bolt action platform. The round was originally designed to be a battle rifle cartridge and not a Sniper rifle cartridge.

Weatherby 6.5  Creedmoor

The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed for long-range shooting by ballisticians with over 50 years more data and science than the 308 Win. It’s a round loved by 1,000-yard bench rest shooters and has been for a reason.

The same gun in a modular Chassis

The 6.5 Creedmoor has considerably less drop, and out to a thousand yard, it outperforms the 308 significantly. At 1,000 yards the 308 on average has in excess of 300 inches of drop and has a velocity of around 1,500 feet per second when loaded with a 150-grain projectile. The 6.5 Creedmoor experiences less than 300 inches of drop and the heaviest rounds are still hitting 1,600 feet per second.

On average the Supersonic range of the 6.5 Creedmoor is further than the 308 Winchester by 200 feet.

Sectional Density

Sectional density comes from a calculation that compares a bullet’s diameter and its weight. The higher the sectional density the better the round is. Sectional density is important when it comes to considering a rounds ability to penetrate. This is going to be a consideration for hunters who need to stop a living target.

308 AR 10s tend to be more affordable

Sectional density is calculated by dividing the bullet’s weight in pounds by its diameter in inches. So if you took a 308 round and a 6.5 round of the same weight the 6.5 would have a higher sectional density due to its diameter.

For example, a 150 grain 7.62 round has a sectional density of .226

A 150 grain 6.5 mm round has a sectional density of .307.

This means the 6.5 mm round is going to outperform the 308 when it comes to penetration. This is going to be incredibly important when it comes to penetrating an animal.

Ballistic Coefficient

Ballistic coefficient, or BC, is a measure of how a bullet cuts through the air. Essentially it’s a rating based on how streamlined the bullet is and how it resists air drag. When comparing BC’s the higher the BC the better. A high BC means the round is more streamlined and resists the effects of air drag. A high BC also means a projectile is more resistant to wind drift, maintains a higher velocity.

Precision 308 Chassis platform from Savage

The higher the BC the flatter the trajectory will be. This means less bullet drop and a more predictable drop pattern. This is invaluable to know when shooting at long ranges and the flatter the trajectory the easier it is to hit a target. Without digging too deep into the science of BC we can show the difference between 308 and 6.5 CM.

A Pricier 6.5 Creedmoor AR 10

Let’s look at Hornady’s Match Loads:

The 308 Win Match 178 grain boat tail hollow point has a BC of.530

The 6.5 CM Match 140-grain boat tail hollow point has a BC of .580

You see this trend throughout a wide variety of loads. When you compare like with like you see the 6.5 always wins in BC.

Rifle and Ammo Selection

The science behind ammunition is fun and as a wanna be ballistician I find it equal parts fascinating and confusing. Now inside of 500 yards you aren’t likely to notice much difference between the two rounds unless you are a competition shooter. Even then it’s minimal. The 6.5 Creedmoor has proven to be ballistically the better round. Will that be a major concern for shooters inside 500 yards?

Ammo Matters

Unlikely. What will affect you is your ability to choose a particular rifle. Rifle choice is one of the most important considerations for any shooter. At this point rifles in 308 are not only more common, but they are significantly cheaper on average. This isn’t always the case, a Remington 700 SPS in 6.5 Creedmoor is about the same price as the same gun in 308.

However, if I wanted an AR 10 in 6.5 Creedmoor I’d have to be willing to spend significantly more money. Also if I was shopping for a budget rifle I’m more likely to find it in 308 than 6.5 Creedmoor.

Best Rifle Calibers for Big Game Hunting

You may have had a heated debate on this topic with a hunting buddy: What’s the best caliber for big game hunting? Everyone has an opinion on it. The truth is that there is not one right answer. So much is based on personal preference and what type of game you are hunting that selecting just one is nearly impossible. But that does not mean that certain rifle calibers are not better than others; in fact, quite the opposite is true.

There are a few that are more capable than the rest when it comes to your best option for hunting calibers suited for big game. Before you check out the latest semi-automatic rifles for sale, do yourself a favor and look at these bullet caliber options that many hunters agree are preferable for larger game.

.338 Winchester Magnum

What is more representative of big game hunting than Alaskan wildlife? A widely used bullet for hunting moose and grizzlies is the .338 Winchester Magnum. Nearly everyone who has done any sort of large game hunting in North America has used this ammunition at some point. These rounds can take out big game, but they are also generally associated with a large recoil and can be more expensive than some of the other rounds on the list. Don’t let that deter you, however. If you need to take down big game in the States, the .338 will get the job done.

7mm Remington Magnum

Do you desire to hunt exotic big game from regions of Africa? Perhaps impala, nyala, kudu or other animals that are not seen in the States? If so, then the 7mm Remington Magnum is the caliber for you. Commonly associated with a flat trajectory and consistency in hitting long range shots, there are numerous reasons why the 7mm is ideal for big game hunts. Stellar ballistic coefficients, above average velocities, and mid-range bullet weights help make the 7mm Rem Mag the right choice for the open plains and other African terrains may find yourself hunting in.

.30-06 Remington

Another caliber found in many rifle magazines throughout Africa is the .30-06. Though not often used at the distances that the 7mm Remington Magnum is, the .30-06 Remington is more than capable of taking down your prey at a few hundred yards. One of the smaller bullets on this list, it has plenty of power to be useful against most species you would be hunting. These controlled expansion rounds keep the hide of the animal intact while still deliver lethal force. With a long history of usage, the .30-06 is an old favorite for many hunters that continues to show its worth out in the field.

.308 Winchester

What could be a better seal of approval than that of the United States Military? The .308 Winchester is the civilian equivalent to what the armed forces use, the 7.62x51mm NATO. Bringing that kind of power in your ammunition to hunting expeditions means when you find your target, you don’t need to worry that you did not bring enough firepower. It is ideal for the most common big game in North America such as deer, black bears, and elk. Easily accessible and easy to fire, this could be the round you need for most hunts in North America.

Though there are plenty of calibers to choose from – anything between a .22 caliber and a 50 cal – there are some that are more equal than others in the world of big game hunting. In addition to the ammunition, it’s a good idea to have high-powered rifle scopes at your disposal. All the ammo in the world will not do you a bit of good if you cannot see the target you are aiming for.

Now that you know a little more about the caliber you will need, you can go scope out the latest bolt action rifles or other firearms to make your hunt successful. Make sure that the rifles you own or buy are compatible with the ammunition you need. While the options presented here are not the only ones available, they are some of the best for big game hunting.
