Types of Semi-Automatic Handguns

Developed in the late 1800’s, a semi-automatic handgun is a type of pistol that has a single chamber and barrel and uses the power from each fired shot to load a new round into the chamber while simultaneously ejecting the used casing from the gun. This allows another shot to be fired as soon as the trigger is pulled again until the magazine is empty.

Ammo for semi auto handguns is loaded into a removable magazine that is commonly inserted into the grip of the gun. There are no current federal US laws regulating the maximum amount of ammo a magazine may contain though several states have imposed their own restrictions. Texas does not currently have any restrictions on ammo capacity.

Semi-automatic handguns only fire one shot per pull of the trigger, unlike fully automatic weapons that will fire continuously while the trigger is held down until the ammo limit is reached. A revolver can also fire a round for each pull of the trigger, but does so in a different way and is not considered a semi-automatic handgun. Revolvers don’t automatically eject the spent casing when a new shot is fired and typically hold fewer rounds than a semi-automatic. A revolver will also take longer to reload because you must manually eject the casings and load each round separately. Semi-automatic handguns reload much more easily since you can insert a fully loaded magazine into the gun very quickly. Some self-defense experts believe that these factors alone mean that semi-automatic handguns posses a significant advantage over revolvers. A new player in the concealed carry weapons market is the Smith & Wesson Shield. In early April 2012, Smith and Wesson announced and released a new M&P pistol. This is an ideal concealed carry weapon. Not only does it have a 3.1-inch barrel, but it also has an 8-round capacity. The other feature that makes this pistol superior to many other concealed carry weapons is that it is less than an inch thick. The S&W Shield weighs in around 19 ounces so it is very easy to conceal. This is a great shooting pistol that comes in both 9mm and .40. The only issue with this pistol is your ability to purchase one! They should become easier to find later in the year, but right now they are few and far between.

Springfield Armory XDS

The final concealed carry weapon I would like to highlight is the 2012 offering from Springfield Armory, the XDS. The Springfield Armory XDS is around 1-inch thick with a 3.3-inch barrel. It’s roughly the same size as the Shield but weighs slightly more at 21.5 ounces. The two great features of this pistol are the fiber optic front sight and the fact that it is a .45! This pistol shoots as well as a full size Springfield Armory XDM with a trigger that feels very similar to its larger XDM brother. In my opinion, the XDS is the ultimate concealed carry weapon.

There is a lot of debate as to which is the best place to purchase a firearm. Should you go to one of the many online gun shops or one of your local gun stores? This seems to be a fairly polarizing argument that should be examined further. Since we started both as a local gun store and are now primarily an online gun shop, we thought we would take a look at this argument.

I think the optimal place to purchase a firearm is not as cut and dry as most people think and everyone should be asking themselves several questions before moving forward with their next purchase.

Many online gun shops have great prices but then have hidden credit card fees. Similarly your local gun store will quote you cash prices that do not take into account sales tax. It’s always good to make sure you see every fee up front before making your decision.

3) How quickly do you want this firearm? In a lot of cases you would think your local gun store is the obvious place to go for this. But if you consider that many online gun shops have a much more comprehensive selection of firearms you might be much better off buying online. You should also look at the shipping times for each of the online gun shops to make sure you have an exact understanding of how long it will take to receive your firearm. Make sure you have them quote your shipping times up front!
